Hey guys. From what I've read about cauliflower ear, it seems to indicate that they're permanent. Once you get it, you have to live a life of constantly draining it or it will harden. And after that, only surgery will somewhat correct it.

Is this true? I don't want to live a life of taking time and money to drain ears on a regular basis.

I'd really like to know. I'll be grabbing ear guards if so.

    Haha, short and sweet.

For those that happen to wear them, any suggestions on brand and make? I'd want a comfortable one that also doesn't hurt training partners.

Yes, unless you are a professional grappler if not why don't use a earguard to avoid getting such ear conditions.

Use a soft one though. If not you won't have any sparring partners

Also, Is cauliflower ear a slowly developed condition? Like, can you catch it in the early stages? Or is it like a sudden rupture due to abrasion?

As soon as I get sore ears I throw my head gear on. I make sure not to grind my head against theirs for whatever reason. I have these and love them:

    CK Tornado Headgear

When I got my first cauli I waited a few days before starting to drain it and still got most of it down. It just took a week or two of draining and packing...people can't even tell until I point it out. The people who has full on caulis are those who keep rolling even after the first tearing of blood vessels. Just be smart about it and you'll be fine.

I agree with what others have said, get headgear, but get soft headgear. Nothing worse than rolling with a guy who has headgear and keeps grinding his head bra against your ears.

You don't have to drain it for life. You only have a 1-6 day (approximate) window to drain it after the injury. After that it will harden and you won't need to (or be able to) drain it more.

ah its not that bad I've gotten it twice. The first time when it hardened it went down to about the size of a BB... Right now however.... Its hardening and it is still pretty big... Ah but who cares? Its just ears.

It's a sudden rupture due to abrasion. From an impact or hard shearing motion on the ear, the skin separates from the cartilage and a hematoma forms (blood and some other stuff). Then you have three options. The first is to go to a doctor who deals with ears, have him drain it and sew the skin to the cartilage to re-attach. The second is to get some needles from the drugstore and do it yourself. You need to drain it, then apply pressure, and it will still re-fill so you'll have to do it repeatedly. The first two options mean you have to take a week off from training. The third option is to just leave it be, and it will harden.

What happens is the skin separates from the cartalidge from blunt trama. Putting pressure on it not only to keep it from filling with blood but also helps the skin reattatch itself to the cartilage. The skin feeds the cartilage so once they're separated the cartilage dies and deforms causing it to look even worse than the initial injury. Eventually once the blood inside of your ear dries it will stop deforming. That's another reason you hould keep presure on it. The less space the blood has to fill, the less blood there is to dry and stop the deforming process. If it's already deformed you can get cosmetic surgery to fix it, or you can just grow a penis and show your scars.

Sorry Rambo, didn't see your post

Thanks for all the info guys. It really cleared everything up.

I mean, if happens it happens. But if I can prevent it, I'd definitely will try to. Going to the doctor costs money and time. DIY with needles at home also costs time and money. It ain't cheap that's for sure.

I know that some people roll for years and never get it, others will get it. A veteran that has good skills that has CE is pretty cool and has a good story to tell. The beginner that is just starting out that gets CE is just unfortunate.

To me its like, if you get a battle scar from being in a fierce battle in a war is alright to have. The scar may be nasty, but it's honorable and neat. To get a battle scar from accidentally shooting yourself in the leg, becomes just unfortunate and regretful.

Don't wait until your ears are sore. Once they become sore, you are at immediate risk of cali. Put them on the minute you have a partner on the mat.

Cliff Keen Tornado are the best.

If you can't afford 3 bucks for some insulin syringes, then you got other problems.

I kinda threw that in as a catch along with doctor, time and money. For the insulin needles its more about time. Taking several minutes to drain a ear, wait to fill, and repeat is not a convenient thing.
