I drink a carb/protein (35g carb/15g protein) drink while I train with weights. Should I also do so when I do cardio? For cardio, I do some interval training on a treadmill for ~30 minutes, jogging/running for about 20 of those. I also do some biking.

Should I be drinking a carb/protein drink if my main goal is fat loss? I'm about 235-240 but would like to be closer to 225-230.

Hey...thanks for the heads up. I particpated in that thread. Can you direct me to the post that addresses specifically cardio and why or why I shouldn't drink this during cardio?

Thanks for being nice, bro.

sure thing mate. it's the first response post on that page. I'll even post it here for your reading convenience.

I'd stick with water. You probably shouldn't be consuming any extra calories during your workouts if fat loss is your primary goal.

Considering your goals (weight loss), I would stick with water during your workouts and whey protein post workout (I like whey isolate because it doesn't sit as heavy for me and absorbs quickly). Stay away from meal replacements like muscle milk post work out for your goals because they have some excess fat/carbs that you do not need.

And add burpees as part of your cardio routine.

and look! He even suggests that that poster add burpees to their cardio routine. I suggest that you do the same!

Oh and before you ask:

wikipedia said:
The burpee is a calisthenic exercise performed to increase strength and explosiveness. Performed in repetitions, it also improves cardio-vascular fitness. Though there are several different variations of the burpee, some utilizing Weights such as Kettlebells or Weight Vests, the most common form is...

1. Start in a push up position.
2. Do one push up.
3. Quickly jump feet forward to a squatting position, like in a squat thrust.
4. Jump high into the air, bringing your knees up to your chest & raising your hands above your head.
5. Land with feet together, on the balls of your feet..
6. Drop back to a squat.
7. Jump feet back to a push up position.
8. Repeat many times.

/sarcasm off

Well, I kinda disagree with the premise of not drinking one during weight training. It's about 150 calories (about the amount of calories I burn during my warm-up) and from the research I've done, this combination actually helps with anti-catabolism and cortisol production.

Do you have any insight there?

you are right, but is your goal anti-catabolism and cortisol reduction OR is your goal fat loss?

A good carb/protein drink that is 30% hydrolyzed whey and 70% WMS is 115 calories per 30g scoop (~7g protein / 20g carbs).. if your goal is PURELY recovery and muscle growth then you'll want about 2-3 scoops in your drink, not just one.

Like the thread said, if you goal is purely fat loss, drink water.

Hmm, I usually drink WMS+BCAAs during BJJ and it hasn't significantly hampered my weight loss goals...

As far as muscle milk or protein perhaps those are best left for post workout.

But Saith, I don't think your goals are pure weight loss. Obviously by drinking WMS and BCAAs, you are trying to fuel your body during the workout and repair your muscles. By cutting that out, it'll help put you farther into caloric deficit, thus making you lose more weight.

This whole discussion already happened in the other thread.

Its <150 friggin calories. It's not going to hamper your weight less. It would take around 23 days before you gained (or didn't lose the additional) 1 pound of fat. And with all the benefits of muscle retention that these shakes have, you probably increase your met abolism and HELP weightloss by sparing muscle loss. And "caloric deficit" is far from the only factor that determines weight loss. Ignoring that is retarded.

agreed T_Money, but the problem is that you assume that he is drinking 1 serving (30g) of a protein powder.. i am assuming that he is dosing properly and drinking a carb / protein drink that is around 60-120g. The 60-120g shake makes much more of a difference.

Honestly, unless you SERIOUSLY need to lose weight and care nothing about recovery, strength gain, or muscle growth.. drink some carbs/protein/bcaa... whatever

just drink something.

I really appreciate your participation in this thread, but why would you assume I'm drinking 30g of protein when I explicitly state I'm drinking 35g carbs/15g protein in my first post? Not sure where you're going with the 60-120g business. That's quite a difference.

And I also said I'm looking to drop about 5-10 lbs and am not naive enough to think you can do that without sacrificing SOME muscle mass.

as far as the 60-120g shake that is roughly 2-4 scoops of a 2:1 WMS to hydrosylate product. I vary my intake in peri and post-workout from 2-4 scoops depending on intensity and goals. I got a lot of my information regarding dosing and amount from the trueprotein boards, but as always, they could've been very wrong.

To FINALLY (i think i've done everything but answer it) answer your first question. Without knowing you or your met-abolism or how you truly work out... I'd say just keep drinking the drink and you'll still meet your goals.:icon_chee

You can always choose to drop the drink for a month and see what happens. I've played mad scientist on myself for a while now to see what the best things for me are and I'm pretty happy with the results. Through research and then experimentation, I can gain and lose weight whenever I choose... it's just a matter of willpower.
