New Costume, Character and Story Details for CIVIL WAR

Black-Panther-Captain-America-Civil-War-061015-Dragonlord.jpg

JoBlo has some cool costume, character, and story details for Captain America: Civil War that will further your excitement for the project, touching on what upgrades you can expect from returning characters and some details on one of the new ones.

Black Panther will be on a mission of his own that has nothing to do with the Rogers/Stark squabble (with speculation that he could be hunting The Winter Soldier on his own for any number of reasons). However, it appears that Black Panther will stand more on the side of Stark than Rogers (at least in the beginning), which will feature a showdown between both characters.

Panther's costume will be shrouded in Vibranium. In the showdown between Cap and Panther we'll see him scratching Cap's shield easily and his prowess will prove to be a viable threat to Rogers. It is speculated that Stark needs Black Panther to help take Cap down. In addition to Black Panther's sleek costume, we'll also see a sleek Panther jet of some type, which we're told looks very "Stark-like" in its technical buildout.

Hawkeye has been slowly morphing from his Ultimate version to the Marvel 616 version, and will be adding more purple and flair in Civil War, as well as a full right sleeve to his costume.

Paul Rudd's Ant-Man will have a much "bigger" costume upgrade, as the one he wears in his solo film is derived from the old 1960's version that Michael Douglas' Hank Pym wore at that time. For Civil War, we'll see a more modern/techno stylish costume. You can expect to see Ant-Man take on his Giant Man form (about 15-20 ft. height) and square off against Iron Man and his team. In terms of visuals, we'll also see Ant-Man standing on one of Hawkeye's arrows, ready to be launched. Very cool.

Don Cheadle's War Machine will be back in action for Civil War and it looks like he'll be getting a serious armory upgrade as well. He'll be looking more tank-style in this film and will have a new dual weapon that acts as a shoulder cannon/gun that can also be detached and used as a kind of warhammer/baton.

The Falcon's new costume will have wrist lasers and grappling hooks. Redwing will be featured as The Falcon's helper/sidekick in Civil War but will be a robotic drone, obviously "linked" to him. The "bird" will be red in color and will resemble a cooler, modified MCU-like "bird" drone. A telepathically-linked bird seems like a lot to explain in an already packed film. A drone accessory makes more sense for this version of The Falcon.

And, finally, Cap will finally add his trademark chainmail armor to his suit, which has long been a staple of his uniform in the comics.

New Details on Martin Freeman's Possible Role in CIVIL WAR

Martin-Freeman-Civil-War-050615-Dragonlord.jpg

A few days ago, Martin Freeman (Sherlock, The Hobbit trilogy) joined the cast of Captain America: Civil War in an unspecified role. New reports are shedding some possible new light on Freeman’s character in the film. According to a report from the Latino Review, Freeman will play some sort of interrogator and will return again in the Black Panther movie.

The report speculates that this could be the Cinematic Universe version of Everett Ross, a government liaison from the comics who becomes an expert on Wakanda and a friend to T’Challa. It also notes that “interrogator” shouldn’t be taken to mean “torturer,” noting that Freeman is an affable actor who will probably play a mild-mannered, likable character.

Speculator further, it’s possible that Everett Ross could become another link between the government, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and the Marvel movies, in addition to Maria Hill. Freeman will make his Marvel debut in Captain America: Civil War, opening May 6, 2016.

Martin Freeman Joins Marvel's CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

Martin-Freeman-Captain-America-Civil-War-Dragonlord.jpg

Marvel's Captain America: Civil War has added another name to its growing cast with Martin Freeman, who will make his debut in the film. "From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in The Office, Martin's range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us," said Captain America: Civil War Producer Kevin Feige. "We couldn't be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

Marvel doesn’t specify what character Freeman is playing, but as of now the lineup for Civil War includes Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), as well as Chadwick Boseman’s debut appearance as Black Panther, Daniel Bruhl as the villainous Baron von Zemo, and the new Spider-Man who has yet to be cast.

Celebrated for his roles in Sherlock, Fargo, the Hobbit trilogy, and much more, Freeman has earned one Primetime Emmy Award and one BAFTA Award, both for his portrayal of Doctor John Watson in Sherlock. Martin has also been nominated for a Golden Globe for his role of Lester Nygaard in Fargo, and nominated for a further two Emmy Awards and two BAFTA Awards. Most recently Martin has been seen hosting SNL and has filmed Tina Fey's untitled wartime black comedy.

Production on Captain America: Civil War is currently underway in Atlanta. The film hits theaters May 6, 2016.

Comments: It would be funny if Martin Freeman is cast as Wong, the assistant of Doctor Strange (played by Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch).

First Promo Art at Cap and Iron Man's New Suit for CIVIL WAR

El Mayimbe (formerly from Latino Review) has posted on his Instagram what seems to be the first official promo artwork for the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. The art features Cap and Iron Man in their new suits.

New concept art gives us a preview of Cap's new suit, and while it’s not too different, there are some cool changes. The star on his chest is a bit brighter, and there’s more definition to the abdomen section, which has been elongated a bit. His pants and shoulder straps are slightly changed and more streamlined, and he got a shiny new pair of boots. His shield also looks a little darker than the previous version.

Mayimbe mentions that Iron Man is wearing the "Bleeding Edge" armor. In the comics, this suit was known as the "Bleeding Edge" armor, which was supposedly built out of nanobots and housed not in a workshop or a briefcase, but inside Tony Stark’s own body. The film opens on opens May 6, 2016.

Chris Evans Reveals CAPTAIN AMERICA Is Probably a Virgin

Captain-America-Black-Widow-042815-Dragonlord.jpg

Captain America may be The Avengers' star-spangled stud, but according to actor Chris Evans, the only action Steve Rogers gets is on the battlefield. In a recent interview promoting Cap's new adventure in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Evans theorized that his character is most likely a virgin.

"It’s funny when you think about it – he’s probably a virgin. [Laughs.] He's probably a virgin!" Evans said. "I don’t know when it would’ve happened." But when the possibility of a one-night stand during Captain America’s USO tour in Captain America: The First Avenger came up, Evans defended the Captain's more conservative virtues.

"He was on tour. That's true. Maybe one of those [dancing] girls blew his mind. [Laughs] He’s probably just a good guy. He was probably holding out for Peggy Carter and he's a little more old-fashioned in that sense," he told Entertainment Weekly. "These are a lot of things that I think are giant conflicts, but they're also very personal conflicts. He's a very human guy. That's why I like him."

Captain America Might Probably Still Be A Virgin According to Star Chris Evans

Comments: Aside from Evans joking and all, I always assumed that Cap got some action during the USO tour. It was very subtle but there was an exchange of looks between Cap and a dancer during the USO montage. Then there was his conversation with Black Widow in The Winter Soldier where he implied that he has had some experience after 1945. "I'm 95, I'm not dead," Cap said.

New Details on Crossbones, Costumes and More for CIVIL WAR

Captain-America-Civil-War-041715-Dragonlord.jpg

JoBlo has uncovered some juicy new details for the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. Pretty much every Avengers character that doesn't have their own franchise is going to appear in Civil War. Aside from Cap, Winter Soldier, Falcon, Black Panther, Black Widow, Iron Man, and Hawkeye, the site confirms Scarlet Witch, The Vision, War Machine, and Ant-Man will also appear. The non-hero villains are Baron Zemo and Crossbones. There's no info yet on how Spider-Man's involved.

In terms of who's facing off with who: So far it looks like Cap, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Falcon versus Iron Man, War Machine, The Vision, and Ant-Man, with the Scarlet Witch and Black Panther somewhere in the mix. Expect to see Ant-Man take on the Giant-Man form in battle.

The Falcon will be getting a costume upgrade with a modified version of his Winter Soldier suit but with grey and red colors. Captain America will be carrying over a slightly modified version of his Age of Ultron suit, and The Winter Soldier will look very much as he did before. The coolest costume news is for Brock Rumlow aka Crossbones. Crossbones will be in his trademark get-up which is described as "messier" and the skull imagery on the suit is described as "graffiti-esque." He does indeed wear the skull mask that covers his entire face, which is said to be a hybrid mask/helmet. Think Army of Two.

Instead of the New Warriors being the catalyst for the Superhero Registration Act, it will be Crossbones (in costume) who will be the catalyst that kicks off the film, instigating an attack that causes much death and destruction, causing the government to step in and put out the Superhero Registration Act.

The other element that will be a key focus is The Winter Soldier, whose existence is the big question as he has the ability to be a hero, but has also been a villain. This causes the main rift between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, as the disagreement leads them to opposing sides. The main thrust, as in the comics, looks to be "if there is a threat - should The Avengers show up, is it their place to do so, and what gives them the authority to do so?"

We all know that Chadwick Boseman will appear as T'Challa/Black Panther in Civil War, but his role in the war isn't one-sided as he'll have his own agenda in the film. There's been speculation that he'd take the Spider-Man role as it plays out in the comics, but that doesn't look to be the case. Either way, his involvement will still be significant.

Exclusive: First Footage from CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR!

Spider-Man-Captain-America-022315-Dragonlord.jpg

Dragonlord Exclusive: I have just obtain the very first footage from the Marvel Studios' highly-anticipated Captain America: Civil War. I've also uncovered major details on the plot and the characters involved in this epic showdown. There have been reports in the past that Marvel was rebooting Spider-Man and Peter Parker was going back to high school. Recently, there were rumors that it would be Miles Morales that would take up the mantle of the Web-Slinger.

I'm here to report that they are all wrong! Marvel went with another direction. In the new reboot, Spider-Man is now a super-villain! Yes, you heard me right. Spidey is now a bad guy. This new Spider-Man is the most ruthless and vicious villain in Marvel Studios' history. The very first scene he appears in, Spidey orders the death of a woman by slicing her face off with a boat propeller!

Take a look at the footage below and I'll give you a breakdown on some of the important details. At the 1:20 mark, you can see how they introduced Spidey's camouflage suit from the Civil War comics. At 2:49, Tony Stark makes his first appearance and in what appears to be a homage to the classic "Demon in a Bottle" comic book storyline. Brilliant how Marvel seamlessly incorporates all these plot elements into one film.

During the 3:54 mark, Doctor Doom shows up and displays his formidable powers. At 4:24, Spidey kills a woman taking a bath. What a bastard. This wouldn't be a Civil War if there weren't other superheroes involved and at 4:59 Matt Murdock a.k.a. Daredevil shows up! Nerdgasm. At 5:39, Marvel unexpectedly rips off the "rushing or dragging" scene straight from Whiplash. You're better than this, Marvel. At 5:50, Spidey devices an elaborate death trap to one of his enemies.

In a surprising plot twist, Doctor Doom is actually on the side of the good guys as evident at the 7:25 mark. At 7:46, Spidey kills two people in a shower. Cameo appearance by Kurt Russell at 8:11 mark. Around the 8:40 mark, Spidey makes love to the redheaded Mary Jane Watson, who is also a villain.

Marvel boldly reveals the "Spider Clone Saga" storyline in the movie during the 9:43 mark. Spoiler alert, Mary Jane dies at the 11:50 mark. During the post-credits scene, we are treated to the iconic Spider-Man unmasked scene. So there you have it. I don't know about you but this looks to be another Marvel hit, probably going to gross $800 million domestically. No wonder the Batman v Superman movie moved its release date to avoid Captain America: Civil War.

New Details on the Sony/Marvel SPIDER-MAN Deal Revealed

Marvel-Studios-Spider-Man-021015-Dragonlord.jpg

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed new details on the Sony/Marvel Spider-Man deal. Instead of Sony selling the superhero back to Marvel, it made a move no one expected: opting to lease the rights to the web-slinger to its rival for a single film.

Marvel has been trying for years to wrest the Spider-Man rights back from Sony, offering billions, sources say. But Sony, franchise-starved as it is, eschewed the quick cash to keep its $4 billion franchise in house.

Sources say no money changed hands between the two studios in the deal and is instead seen as a quid pro quo transaction. Sony benefits from the free exposure of a younger, rebooted Spider-Man in a film from red-hot Marvel, while Marvel gets its hands on the most prized superhero in its lucrative universe. Also, since Marvel controls the merchandising rights to Spider-Man, the effect this move will have on sales could be worth more than any cut they would have seen. Variety says Sony will get more than 60% of the ticket sales.

Though Spider-Man will first appear in an unnamed Marvel movie, Sony and producer Amy Pascal will have more influence over the actor cast in the iconic role because Sony retains final approval. The studio is currently looking for an actor much younger than 31-year-old Andrew Garfield as well as a writer for its reboot.

Director Marc Webb will not be back to complete a third Spider-Man. Amazing producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad have been downgraded to executive producers, with no real say in the creative direction of the franchise.

One knowledgeable source sees the move as a first step to Marvel re-acquiring the rights to Spider-Man down the road, while another believes Disney is positioning itself to acquire Sony should it ever become available.

It's Official: SPIDER-MAN Will Join Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Marvel-Studios-Spider-Man-Avengers-020915-Dragonlord.jpg

Spider-Man is getting a mighty Marvel makeover. Sony Pictures, which has been the steward of the franchise since 1999, is partnering up with Disney-owned Marvel Studios to bring a new version of the Spider-Man character to life. Latino Review was the first to report this a few weeks ago.

As part of the revamp, the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film. The companies are not revealing details but that movie is likely to be Captain America: Civil War; the character was a major player in the comics storyline. Andrew Garfield is not expected to reprise the character.

Once the character is re-launched, Sony will then release a new Spider-Man movie on July 28, 2017. Marvel’s Kevin Feige will join Amy Pascal as a producer on the new movie. The duo will “collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger,” according to the companies. Ari Arad and Matt Tolmach, who were producers on the previous movie, will now executive produce.

There is also talk of looking ways to integrate characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the Marvel movies are known, into future Spider-Man films. The move is a major team-up for two rival studios. Spider-Man has been Sony's most lucrative franchise, but the most recent installment, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, disappointed. Disney's Marvel has had unprecedented success with its hero films.

Sony, however, will retain the final creative control and continue to finance, distribute, own the new movies.

To make room for Spider-Man, Marvel has pushed back a number of its films. Thor: Ragnarok has been moved to Nov. 3, 2017 from its July 28, 2017 date. Black Panther will now open July 6, 2018, moving from Nov. 3, 2017. Captain Marvel moved to Nov. 2, 2018 from July 6, 2018, while Inhumans is slotted for July 12, 2019, from its original Nov. 2, 2018 date.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Moves On Without Spider-Man

Spider-Man-Civil-War-121614-Dragonlord.jpg

Last week Latino Review revealed that Marvel's plan for Spider-Man, were they ever able to free him from Sony, would have been to recast the role and reboot the story - start over again from scratch. Kevin Feige and friends wanted Spider-Man for Captain America: Civil War, but Sony's inability to work out a deal squashed that. Today, Badass Digest reached out to their sources in Marvel and followed up on all of this - what's the realistic chance of Spider-Man being in Civil War? According to their sources that ship has sailed and Spidey is not in the current conception of Civil War. The movie will go ahead without Peter Parker.

For now. That's an important note here; there's always the possibility that Spider-Man gets himself a cameo in the film, some sort of post-credits sting. The process on these films is fluid, and Marvel relies heavily on additional shooting, so nothing is in stone until the film is in theaters. But anyone hoping that the word of Sony and Marvel negotiating could mean Peter Parker having a major role in Civil War should put that hope away.

One of the sources reiterates that Winter Soldier will be central to the story, and that there have been hints planted through the Marvel movies as to how that works. When asked if the fact that Winter Soldier killed Tony Stark's parents could have anything to do with it, the source noted that it was an interesting line of thought. That's not quite a confirmation, but it makes an awful lot of sense that a conflict between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers starts when Tony finds out Steve's best friend killed his mom and dad.

Sony, Marvel Discussed Spider-Man Appearing in CIVIL WAR

Spider-Man-Civil-War-120914-Dragonlord.jpg

Sony Pictures has considered partnering with Marvel and producing an animated comedy as it looks to revamp its big screen strategy for Spider-Man. Details of the discussions are contained in e-mails to and from Sony’s motion picture chief Amy Pascal, which were released on the Internet by hackers this week. The e-mails reveal extensive discussions between executives at Sony and Marvel owner Walt Disney, all the way up to their respective chief executives Kaz Hirai and Robert Iger.

In an Oct. 30 e-mail, Sony Pictures president Doug Belgrad tells Ms. Pascal about a potential scenario that would see Marvel produce a new trilogy of Spider-Man movies while Sony retains creative control, marketing and distribution. In a separate e-mail, Ms. Pascal tells a business partner that Marvel wanted to include Spider-Man in its planned third Captain America movie. Sony also considered bringing back Sam Raimi as a director or producer.

The talks with Marvel eventually broke down and Sony is now planning to go ahead with its own Spider-Man slate, according to people familiar with the matter. As of late November, executives were planning a “Spidey summit” for January to discuss future plans. Among projects in development are an animated Spider-Man comedy that would be produced by Chris Miller and Phil Lord, the team behind 22 Jump Street and The Lego Movie, as well as previously disclosed Spider-Man spin-offs focused on villain team Sinister Six, super-foe Venom, and women from the webslinger’s life.

Crossbones Rumored to Be the Main Villain in CIVIL WAR

Frank-Grillo-Civil-War-111414-Dragonlord.jpg

Variety reporter Justin Kroll claimed on Twitter tonight that Crossbones -- played by Frank Grillo in Captain America: The Winter Soldier -- will reappear in Captain America: Civil War and serve as the film's main antagonist. Kroll said it as an offhanded remark, as though it was widely known; it's been speculated, but not announced and Grillo has steered clear of confirming that he was even back for the film. Kroll tweeted, "Beat by Marvel in that one, two things he will play villain but not main one, Crossbones still main."

When Kroll says "beat by Marvel," what he means is that a number of industry trade publications discovered today that Daniel Bruhl had been cast in Civil War, but that Marvel reportedly elected to break the news themselves rather than respond to inquiries about the rumors. In the story that immediately followed Civil War in the comics, Captain America was seemingly assassinated, seemingly by Crossbones. Both of those things later proved to be incorrect.

Daniel Bruhl Joins the Cast of CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

Daniel-Bruhl-Captain-America-Civil-War-Dragonlord.jpg

Daniel Bruhl (Rush, Inglourious Basterds) has joined the cast of Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, set to rock the Marvel Cinematic Universe on May 6, 2016. The celebrated actor earned Golden Globe, SAG, BAFTA and Critics’ Choice nominations for his role as Niki Lauda in director Ron Howard’s Rush. In addition to Howard, Bruhl has also worked with other esteemed directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Paul Greengrass, Anton Corbijn, and Michael Winterbottom.

“With Daniel's ability to deliver intense, nuanced performances, we knew we had found yet another great actor to share the screen with some of our biggest heroes,” said Producer Kevin Feige.

Bruhl joins Chris Evans (Captain America), Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man), and Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) in Captain America: Civil War, with Joe and Anthony Russo returning to direct after this year's hit Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Sebastian Stan, Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson are expected to return while Jeremy Renner has also been rumored to be attached to the project.

Deadline reports that Bruhl's role will be a villainous one, and with his German roots, could we be about to see Baron Zemo brought to the big screen? Variety adds that he is not the main villain in Captain America: Civil War but could potentially be the top menace in Marvel’s Dr. Strange (Baron Mordo).

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Announced for May 6, 2016

Captain-America-Civil-War-Logo-102814-Dragonlord.jpg

Marvel is today unveiling the subtitle for its third Captain America movie: Civil War. The subtitle speaks directly to the Civil War plot line that Marvel is introducing in this movie, which is supposed to kick off the conflict that'll propel its next round of superhero films. Civil War film will pit Captain America against Iron Man, though Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige stated at an event this afternoon that the movie's plot will differ from the original comic series.

Marvel had a little bit of fun announcing the new Captain America title at an event this afternoon, originally claiming that it was going to be called Serpent Society — a mysterious name that people seemed intrigued, if not generally confused by. Several minutes later into the event, Marvel revealed that the true name of the movie was Civil War. Marvel is also announcing a huge number of other movies today, including Captain Marvel, a third Thor, two more Avengers films, Inhumans, and Black Panther.

Joe and Anthony Russo, who directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, will also be directing Civil War. The film is scheduled for a release on May 6th, 2016.

Marvel Reveals Complete Phase 3 Plans and Release Dates

Marvel-Feige-Downey-Boseman-Evans-Dragonlord.jpg

At a special presentation at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood Tuesday, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige gave press and several hundred fans some insight into the studio's plans for their huge superhero movie slate.

It was a dizzying parade of news, announcing new titles like Black Panther and Inhumans, plus two more Avengers films. The studio released completely plans for phase 3. Marvel revealed the title for the next Captain America film, it's Captain America: Civil War, and the next Thor film: Thor 3: Ragnarok, slated for July 28, 2017. Marvel also pushed the release of Doctor Strange to November 4, 2016. Black Panther will hit theaters on November 3, 2017, starring 42 and Get on Up star Chadwick Boseman.

Feige announced that the studio will make a Captain Marvel film, set for July 6, 2018. Carol Danvers is Captain Marvel, making it the studio's first female-centered film. Marvel will also make an Inhumans film, set for Nov. 2, 2018. Two more ensemble Avengers films were also dated: Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 for May 4, 2018 and Part 2 for May 2019.

Marvel has already announced dates for several phase 3 films: Ant-Man starring Paul Rudd is slated for July 17, 2015, and Captain America 3, which will include Robert Downey Jr. along with Chris Evans, is slated for May 6, 2016. Doctor Strange has been originally dated for July 8, 2016, but director Scott Derrickson and Marvel have been going back and forth with finding a leading man. After negotiations with Joaquin Phoenix fell apart in early October, Benedict Cumberbatch came into talks to take on the titular role. Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which will see James Gunn return to direct, will hit theaters on July 28, 2017.

Robert Downey Jr.'s CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 Deal Revealed

Civil-War-Cover-Captain-America-Iron-Man-Dragonlord.jpg

Robert Downey Jr. will suit as Iron Man at least one more time and is joining Captain America 3. But the deal for Downey to return as Iron Man almost didn’t happen. Originally, Marvel wanted to hire Downey for a small role, which would have required just three weeks of work. But Downey wanted Stark to have a more substantial role in the film’s plot, which would give him more screen time and naturally a bigger payday. This angered Marvel Entertainment chief Ike Perlmutter, who ordered the screenwriters to write Iron Man out of the script entirely, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

Even though the deal appeared dead, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Downey’s reps at CAA continued talks in hopes of working out their issues. Feige was bent on executing his grand vision for extending the life of the Marvel characters over many years.

The executive needed his boss to see the big picture, considering the introduction of the Civil War story is seen as a way to drive the plots of sequels and new franchises for the next seven years, given the dramatic possibilities it offers for future films. The fallout from the government and Stark’s actions would factor into a new Avengers 4 film and beyond that will assemble new characters being introduced like Ant-Man and Doctor Strange, among others, in their own movies.

Downey, who earned $50 million for The Avengers alone, will collect around $40 million plus backend participation for Captain America 3, said sources, and will get an additional payout if Captain America 3 outperforms Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s $714 million worldwide haul. Since the actor did not appear in the first two Captain America films, the thinking is that if the third installment surpasses the last movie, its success could be attributed to Downey.

It’s also worth noting that Evans is clearly a bigger star now, evidenced by the fact that Captain America: The Winter Soldier grossed nearly twice as much as The First Avenger’s $371 million in 2011.

Marvel still could have worked around Downey if need be. With the studio having already reworked plots from the comicbooks to fit its bigscreen agenda, it’s certainly feasible that Stark could have been turned into a different character to butt heads with Captain America — the Incredible Hulk’s Bruce Banner, for example. Another option could have been dropping the Civil War plot entirely, which would have required major rewrites.

Robert Downey Jr. Joins CAPTAIN AMERICA 3; CIVIL WAR Plot

Robert Downey Jr. is on the verge of signing on to Captain America 3, a move that would bring the Civil War storyline from Marvel’s comicbooks to the bigscreen and trigger the start of a new phase of movies from Marvel Studios. The actor is in final negotiations to play billionaire Tony Stark in the third installment, which is slated to begin production in the Spring for a May 6, 2016 release. Downey is already set to suit up as Iron Man for next year’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron and The Avengers 3.

The deal is significant for the Marvel cinematic universe considering the plot will pit Stark against Captain America’s alter-ego Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, as they feud over the Superhero Registration Act, which forces anyone with superhuman abilities to reveal their identities to the U.S. government and agree to act as a police force for the authorities.

Stark supports the program, but Rogers does not, saying it threatens civil liberties, causing sides to be taken and Rogers, among others, to go on the run to avoid arrest. The moral question and battle with his Avengers teammate essentially makes Stark a villain of sorts in Captain America 3, providing Downey with a meaty role he could play out into future Marvel films, including a fourth Avengers.

Marvel on Monday announced plans to reboot the Civil War comicbook miniseries in 2015, which will help introduce the story to new readers leading up to Captain America 3. The first crossover over Marvel’s biggest characters, including Spider-Man, was published in 2006.

Jeremy Renner Hints Hawkeye Might Be in CAPTAIN AMERICA 3

Jeremy-Renner-Joss-Whedon-Avengers-092314-Dragonlord.jpg

Jeremy Renner is one of the great utility players in Hollywood right now. He can lead serious true-life dramas, like his new movie Kill the Messenger, just as easily as he can stand next to Iron Man and Captain America in The Avengers or take the reins of the Bourne franchise. But would he ever consider tackling his very own Marvel Studios movie, one the focuses squarely on Hawkeye?

In a recent talk with the actor, his answer was more of a “No, thanks” than a “Yes, please.” “I’m happy to be the ensemble. I’m not scratching or clawing to do a solo movie by any means,” Renner said. “I think he’s a utility guy that can bounce around into other people’s universes a little bit, especially like ‘Cap 3.’”

That mention of the third Captain America movie, which is set for 2016, came with perhaps the biggest, most knowing wink. Hawkeye’s potential for a significant role in that film has been a hot topic of recent discussion, and it certainly seems like Renner is more than aware of that.

Batman v Superman Moves Release to Avoid Captain America 3

Batman-v-Superman-080514-Dragonlord.jpg

The Marvel/DC release date showdown has come to an end, and it appears that Marvel has come away the victor. Marvel Studios staked out the May 6, 2016 weekend a while ago for an "Untitled Marvel Movie," but when Warner Bros. went looking for a new release date for its Man of Steel follow-up, it decided to plant its flag on May 6, 2016 as well with the thinking that Marvel would subsequently move. Except Marvel didn’t move, it doubled down by announcing that Captain America 3 would be its May 2016 movie, which was certainly a big deal coming off the stellar opening weekend for Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

And so now Warner Bros. has flinched, but instead of delving deeper into the summer, the studio will be trying to kickstart the blockbuster season incredibly early by setting the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice release date on March 25, 2016. If that wasn’t enough, Warner Bros. has announced release dates for 9 untitled DC films and 2 "event films." With the move, Warners and DC are essentially declaring war on Marvel and Disney, which have been the most prolific suppliers of superhero titles.

The DC movies that are expected to fill this ambitious pipeline include Zack Snyder's Justice League movie, standalone spinoffs for Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman and Jason Momoa's Aquaman, as well as a Shazam/Black Adam movie starring Dwayne Johnson and a Sandman movie that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is producing and may star in. WB also laid claim to Nov. 16, 2018, and Nov. 20, 2020, likely for the second and third installments in J.K. Rowling's Fantastic Beasts trilogy (the first film hits theaters in 2016).

WINTER SOLDIER Cast on BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN Showdown

Captain-America-Winter-Soldier-Premiere-032014b-Dragonlord.jpg

During the London press conference for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the cast expressed their feelings about Captain America 3 sharing a release date with Batman vs. Superman. “When two cars are speeding at each other,” said director Joe Russo, “one of them’s got to veer out of the way at some point. Marvel, I think, announced that date originally. If you go back, historically, Marvel and, I think, Sony have been trading off on that May date for a long time and I think when Warner Bros. decided to move that film they moved it to the May date. So, I can see where Kevin [Feige] said, ‘Well, I’m not moving off that date, so…’ I don’t think they’ll be anything to up the ante other than that, hopefully, we make a great movie and everybody’s very excited to see it.”

Co-director Anthony Russo says, "The truth is anybody up here, all we can do is just focus on making the best movie we can make. When and how it gets released, there’s other forces involved in that." Anthony Mackie, who plays The Falcon, was a bit more antagonistic, saying "In other words, ‘punks step up to get beat down!’" Samuel L. Jackson added, "At Marvel, you have heroes. And then there’s DC, where you have interesting bad guys."

Batman vs. Superman was originally scheduled to be released in 2015, but was pushed to May 6, 2016 due to a production delay. Marvel had already claimed that release date for a, then, unnamed film, now known to be Captain America 3. Captain America 3 and Batman vs. Superman are both scheduled for theatrical release on May 6, 2016.

Captain America 3 to Challenge Batman/Superman Head On

Captain-America-Batman-031314-Dragonlord.png

The mystery has been solved -- the untitled Marvel Studios tentpole that Warner Bros.' Batman-Superman movie will go up against on May 6, 2016, is Captain America 3, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. That's the plan, anyway, creating the biggest superhero box office showdown in history (Marvel Studios and parent company Disney staked out the date first). Shooting schedules and post-production could always impact the current blueprint, however. Also, Marvel and Disney have a second untitled movie set to open that summer on July 8, so there is wiggle room.

Marvel films have all but owned the first weekend of summer for the past decade to enormous success, so all of Hollywood was surprised when Warner Bros. announced in January that it would open Batman-Superman movie on May 6, 2016 as well. Batman-Superman stars Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill once again as Superman. It was originally supposed to hit theaters in summer 2015, but its release was pushed back nearly a year. There's no doubt but that Warners is hoping to replicate the blockbuster returns Marvel has enjoyed with its multi-hero Avengers universe.

This week, when promoting the upcoming sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige threw down the gauntlet, saying he had no plans to move off of the May 6 date. He still wouldn't reveal the identity of the film; however, insiders confirm it will indeed be Captain America 3. The world premiere of Winter Soldier is Thursday in Hollywood. Veteran box office observers doubt that the two films will ultimately open opposite each other.

Anthony, Joe Russo to Direct Marvel's CAPTAIN AMERICA 3

Joe-Anthony-Russo-Winter-Soldier-Premiere-Dragonlord.jpg

While Captain America: The Winter Soldier doesn’t bow until April 4th, Marvel is apparently bullish on directors Joe and Anthony Russo. Although it’s not confirmed and the film is not officially greenlit, a new report has the Russo brothers coming back for a third installment of the Captain America franchise within a franchise. Negotiations between the studio and the directors wouldn’t take place until the early box office numbers from Captain America: The Winter Soldier roll in, but the production and recent test screenings have been so impressive that the studio expedited their deal-making process.

Since many of the actors, including Chris Evans, have multi-picture deals, you can expect the principal cast to return for the third installment. Kevin Feige would also return to produce. No writer is attached at the moment, nor is a release date scheduled, but the report says that Marvel and the Russos are busy crafting an outline for the next film. Marvel currently has two release dates in 2016 and one in 2017 for unspecified titles, so it’s safe to assume that Captain America 3 will be one of them, likely 2017 if the three-year separation between films is any indication.

[Update 03/11/14: Kevin Feige and the Russo Brothers have confirmed that the filmmakers are set to return for Captain America 3.]

Would love to see a Civil War story line but Spider-Man was a big part of the story. Can they use him without Sony permission.

They can't use Spider-Man without Sony's permission. But there's a rumor of the two studios trying to work out a deal so that Spidey will be included in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

But Captain America 3's Civil War story is smaller in scope than the limited series with the emphasis on Cap and Iron Man's feud. So I don't think Spidey is necessary in this one.

Sony in Talks to Add SPIDER-MAN to Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Avengers-Spider-Man-100614-Dragonlord.jpg

Everyone else is just playing Marvel's game at this point. Marvel is driving the entire conversation right now. Everyone else is reacting to them, or being forced to try to emulate them, or making a conscious decision not to react to them, which is still a reaction, and through it all, Marvel is making the choices they're making based on a long-range story-driven game plan that takes business considerations into account but that also seems designed to ever keep anyone from being in the position of being able to ruin their plans over money.

There's a fairly pronounced antagonism between Fox and Marvel these days, and it's just going to get stranger as the publishing version of Marvel seems to be making some very strategic decisions about the characters that Fox owns. Deadpool's movie may have finally been announced, but it looks like Marvel's planning to kill Deadpool in the very near future. The rumors about the end of publication for Fantastic Four were denied for months, but now look to be true. And the status quo in the world of the X-Men is in ruins in a way that looks nothing like the movies currently being made. Whatever Marvel's future is, the Fox deal remains a thorn in their side, a sequester of some of their biggest characters that looks unlikely to ever change.

Sony, on the other hand, may be doing things the opposite way. While there's no confirmations on the story, HitFlix is hearing that there are some very cool Spider-Man plans being discussed that would help Sony refocus their enormously important franchise while also opening up some connections in the onscreen Marvel movie universe that would blow fandom's minds. What seems clear from what HitFlix has heard is that Marvel wants to be able to play with all of their characters, and if they can make that work creatively and on a corporate level, they will, and that means the world gets bigger again.

Rumor: Sony in Negotiations to Add SPIDER-MAN to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

This is a super cool idea. Every storyline seems to be good guy vs. evil villian. This storyline would turn that on its head.

Marvel is really stepping it up a notch with their creativity. First they took a gamble with a virtually unknown Guardians storyline and now this. Great stuff.

It is kind of funny that Marvel is doing this after DC decided to do Batman vs Superman, but whatever.

With this recent Civil War/RDJ development, things would have been insanely more interesting if Batman v Superman didn't back out of the same release date as Cap 3.

i like the civil war arc alot, but i dont think regular movie goers who are not comic book geeks are gonna get it.

i sided with good ole' cap in the comic books civil war and i stay there, tony stark can suck it

Throw Wolverine in there.

Not being a comic book guy and not knowing the DC/Marvel dynamic, don't know if possible.

Thanks for the info. Hope they work it out.

Spidey has to be part of the story cause he was Iron Man puppet for the push to get the Bill past, he was the first Super Hero to Unmask(other than the one everyone already knew about) and then regret it and switch sides. But him unmasking was a Major part of the story and needs to be shown.

I am no comic book guy but this sounds bad ass. Fucking sweet man.

Iron Man all day. Police don't hide their face, neither should Super Hero.

Ugh. Of course Cap 3 will earn more than Cap 2. The overwhelming positive reception from audience and critics as well as the big box office performance guarantee that the third Cap film will exceed its predecessor.

They should just give RDJ an additional payout IF Cap 3 crosses $1 billion worldwide and NOT just because it will surpass Cap 2's total.
