It's just that we have different lines in the sand to not cross. France has a big leniency problem toward corrupt politicians (including those who have literally been convicted), but sexuality and private life doesn't matter. I mean, Nicolas Sarkozy was president and he broke a couple that he personally married (and they were his neighbours), no American politician would have any chance with such a backstory. And, well, also he's super corrupted and should finally get several trials in the next couple years.

Now that I've written this, it kinda feels like we don't actually have much lines in the sand at all...

My favourite weird moment was in 2002, when Presidential candidate François Bayrou slapped a ghetto kid that, he claimed, was trying to pickpocket him. Bayrou actually won several points in the polls after that.
