I haven't seen the video, but it is described as Benjamin Griveaux frontally masturbating, and he hasn't claimed that it was fake. For now, it seems that it was first sent to a mistress and that it wasn't unwanted or unsolicited. It was still enough for him to give-up, after a campaign that was already difficult for Macron's party, LREM.
Macron supporter were already divided because of a rogue candidate, world renowned mathematician (Fields medal winner) Cédric Villani, who was recently expelled from LREM for refusing to join Griveaux. Despite LREM winning previous major elections in Paris, Benjamin Griveaux was only on the third place according to the polls, and Villani was further behind.
Griveaux always suffered in the public opinion and is considered arrogant and insincere. He is also famous for running away when some Gilets Jaunes literally stormed the gates of his ministry.
The municipal elections are looking very bleak for LREM, and winning Paris was supposed to be the big trophy that would soothe the defeat. But now it's even less likely to happen, the Socialist mayor Anne Hidalgo should keep her seat, even if the Republican candidate Rachida Dati is rising in the polls. French Municipal elections are done in two rounds every five years, this time on March 15 and 22.
