The National Post: Canada under Conservatives was the freest and most tolerant nation in the world, study finds

It appears that things under Harper weren't as bad as the hysterical Harper haters were told to believe by the media and even idiots outside of Canada like John Oliver. According to The Lagatum Institute, a London based research group, Canada was named the freest and most tolerant country in the World.

Canada, the report notes, “is the most tolerant of immigrants – 92% of people think the country is a good place for immigrants. It is also the fifth most tolerant of ethnic minorities… 94% of Canadians believe that they have the freedom to choose the course of their own lives.”

The finding offers a sharp contrast to the portrait of the Conservative government in the closing weeks of the election, when the country was pictured as an increasingly paranoid, intolerant, unfriendly place bent on keeping out migrants, discriminating against refugees and imposing intolerable demands on ethnic groups....

It looks like Canada did pretty well under a Conservative government. I hope Trudeau doesn't ruin the country like Obama ruined the USA. From the article:

The U.S., it said, is an increasingly dangerous place, ranking outside the top 30 and well below other developed countries.

Norway uber alles.

You didn't even vote Conservative. lol

Anyways, I'm glad we did well on this.

Harper was a goof.

That's why he lost.

Part of the problem is that people think that the US left and right are the equivalent of Canada's left and right. Our extremes are their starting line.

Are you Canadian or American?

Lol gtfo with your editorial from the ass wipe national post that endorsed Harper and his goons. Weird how they don't mention how many years under Harper the economy was in recession.

His bullshit fear mongering backfired big time and we kicked him to the curb. You helped remember? Ty for helping us put the liberals back in power Atheist.

Good old "Liberal tolerance" as in, only tolerant of liberal ideals.

Considering the thousand illegal detentions during G20, the legislation Harper passed regarding the ability to speak about Israel and his campaigning to ban the niqab I am extremely skeptical of this article. But of course Atheist loves it.

It is from an annual study done by a UK research group, dont shoot the messenger. But I understand what you are saying, it is like CBC a few days ago having a headline along the lines of "Economy finally recovering." Because we saw a .01% uptick in gpd under Trudeau, while in July they slammed the PCs for a .04% increase.

You mean during the global financial crisis? I'd say Canada did pretty damn well compared to other countries especially our banks.

Agreed. Although, and perhaps not a criticism, we did put a lot of stock in oil, and were affected by it substantially.

Our banks conservative fiscal behavior is what saved us from the same fate as the US. In 2006, the cons and Flaherty deregulated the mortgage sector with 0% down and 40 year amortization rates that put our real estate market in considerable trouble. The banks advocated against this move, but the government went ahead and did it anyway.

After the '08 recession the banks finally successfully convinced Flaherty to reverse the changes in the mortgage sector, and prices finally started levelling off. But the damage was already done. To this day the key real estate markets in Canada have stagnated and are teetering on a bubble that's worse than the pre-recession real estate bubble of '08 in the US. I can't afford to buy a house right now because after the deregulation of '06 housing prices essentially tripled where I live.

We had a terrible and pro-longed recovery after the recession. Canada wasn't hit nearly as hard as other countries during the recession, but our growth rate afterwards was abysmal compared to other recovering economies.

No, I'm skeptical of the article. Standard of living indexes usually, by necessity, use statistics that are many years old. I don't know what years the study used, but it could have used statistics from much earlier in Harper's reign and which do not reflect changes his policies evoked. Anyone have a link to the study?

Thanks to stricter regulations, something that goes against the core ideas of conservatism.

But now we're fucked, especially in Albeta. The conservatives mismanaged our oil economy on a provincial and federal level. Other countries like Norway wisely invested their oil revenues and are sitting pretty with hundreds of billions in surpluses. All we have to show for decades of oil boom is debt. PC government sold us out bad. It's pathetic.

Hey now you two, this thread isn't about facts or conversation. It's about this:

Good old "Liberal tolerance" as in, only tolerant of liberal ideals.

A good old chance to put down those uppity liberals as they ruin our nation(s)! Grr! Argh!
