just a quick question, looking for an honest answer.

For example if Jon Jones landed a nut shot or eye poke deemed intentional on Chael during their upcoming title fight, and Sonnen claimed he could not continue after 5 minutes. I believe this leads to a DQ, not a no contest. Would Chael Sonnen become the LHW champion?

Nah... that's why Greg Jackson's going to run in with a steel chair.

But in all seriousness, idk.

Yes, I believe you can. If Bones vs Hamill was a title fight Hamill would have been given the belt IMO. Although I'm almost positive the UFC would setup a rematch if that were to happen.

Of course, a win is a win is a win.

Obviously, there would be an immediate rematch.

I would feel so bad for Bruce Buffer if that happened. Poor guy.

Can you imagine how bad that guy would get booed though? It would really be a no win situation in that case. Like if a guy got nailed on the back of the head and was legitimately out of it and couldn't continue. The crowd, the other fighter, the Internet, etc. would go crazy and call him a big pussy and a coward for not continuing. But if he was out of it and continued, he'd probably end up losing anyway from being 1/2 concussed. Cheating pays off in MMA a lot of the time.

I get the feeling that Chael might be spending his training camp practicing how to "walk into" Jones' extended fingers, plan to win by DQ, then retire with the belt

Sure you can. I don't believe there's any hard set criteria on whether a nut shot/eye poke will lead to a NC or a DQ though, as I'm pretty sure I've seen both.

I think this is the type of thing that may vary from State to State, and from Athletic Commission to Athletic Commission (just how some states allow 12-6 elbows, and have different rules about what constitutes a NC vs DQ). I believe in the mantra of "to be the man, you've got to beat the man", so a DQ win shouldn't give you the title.

The only semi-relevant example I can think of was Varner-Cowboy I, when an unintentional illegal knee in the last round stopped the fight, and they went to the scorecards, where Varner was leading anyway - but if Cowboy was leading on the scorecards, he would have won. That rivalry needs to have a trilogy fight, while both guys are still active and in good shape.

Sherdog will be a mess if this happens.

Nope, the champ is above the law. I don't know how the champs haven't figured out that all they have to do is nut punch and bite fingers and poke eyes to stay champ forever.

the answer is yes, and it works well for the promotion, bc a rematch has to happen and people will prob be interested

well Kawajiri retained his Shooto title against Hansen after a DQ, so it's probably possible
