Can you guys talk me into finally watching the godfather

What kind of stamboli hasnt seen this masterpiece yet?

As a hugeeeeeeee movie aficionado I know its kind of ridiculous I still have yet to see this, but I dont know. Just from picking up a tiny amount of details here and there I have this feeling, really based on nothing tbh, that its gonna be dated and boring.

I do love gangster movies though and consider myself a gangster, so am I missing out on not watching it? If I liked Scarface will I definitely like TG?

Scarface is a lot more violent and over the top than The Godfather.

The first Godfather is pure poetry. A practically flawless movie. It's slow paced, but has some brilliant scenes of suspense and violence. The slow build makes these scenes all the more powerful, especially in the hands of FFC. If you are a fan of slow paced movies like There Will Be Blood or, to a lesser extent, The Irishman, you'll probably really enjoy it.

The key in watching The Godfather is to remember that Michael (Pacino's character) does not want to be a part of any of it. The mafia lifestyle, being a "Godfather" etc... what makes the movie so fascinating, and the ending so haunting, is watching how he is pulled into it invariably by forces beyond his control.

The Godfather is my all-time favorite movie. Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, James Caan, and John Cazale. It's truly a masterpiece from start to finish. The only small tiny mistake is the horrible punch thrown by Sonny, but that's just a small nitpick in what's honestly a perfect film.

Robert Deniro tried out for Sonny but it went to Caan, but he impressed so much he was asked to come back and try out for Vito in Godfather II, which he got.

@IloveTHIS you should do yourself a favor and watch this film. You will not be disappointed. Imo the events leading up to the films climax is one of the best in films history , along with the ending.

If you enjoy it then watch Godfather II, which both films are in my top 5 Favorite movies.

They did combine both films in chronological order called The Godfather Epic, which is over 6 hour long but truly worth watching. I wish it was on DVD or digital because I would buy it no question but it's impossible to find.

Good comprehensive first post, which I’m in total accord.
Now explain the benefits of camping with work buds to TS.

The story of Michael Corleone going from idealistic war hero to cold-blooded, merciless mafia boss is one of the greatest stories ever told on film. I actually think part 2 is better than part 1. Part 3 is okay but nowhere near as good. The characters are written so strong and well that it doesn't feel dated and the dialogue is very well done to not be boring.

Is it better than Goodfellas? Which should i watch first?

I finally watched 1 and 2 for the first time a couple of months ago - definitely worth watching but if you’ve waited this long you might be a little disappointed. They’re both touted as two of the greatest films ever (and rightfully so) but having already watched The Sopranos, Goodfellas, etc you’re going to feel like you’ve already seen that world before

You're a huge movie aficionado but haven't watched the Godfather? You're a huuuuuuuuge liar calling yourself a huge movie aficionado.

You're a huge movie aficionado but haven't watched the Godfather? You are also a liar calling yourself a huge movie aficionado son.
yep because not seeing one movie out of of the thousands and thousands you have seen changes everything

Considering this one movie is routinely in most people's top 10, if not top 5 of all time movies made in cinematic history, calling yourself a huge movie aficionado and not having viewed this is quite ridiculous. It's like calling yourself a huge boxing aficianado and never watching an Ali fight.

That’s a classic.
One of my favorites growing up.

Its a good ass movie. As soon as you start it you feel good about watching it.

I watched it for the first time last Saturday as it's my girlfriends favourite film and we'd watched the Irishman the week before... It got a meh from me. It was good, but was never going to live up to the hype. Preferred Irishman.

I can imagine The Godfather being the GOAT during the 70's though. Doesn't compare to Goodfellas and Scarface imo.

Just my two cents...

I don't see Godfather as a gangster movie as such, not in the terms we have come to accept that genre.
You think gangster you think Scarface, Goodfellas, Donnie Brasco, Carlito's Way, Casino, KONY, Mean Streets etc etc

It's more than that, as is Once Upon A Time In America and a few others. These are beautifully epic movies, with more emphasis on family and drama than wiseguys and guns.
@Drain Bamage said it best, Godfather is poetry, it's closer to a sprawling novel, a ballad, a love song, a sonnet, than it is a gangster movie

I loved getting stoned and sitting back and taking it all in, looking forward to watching the second one soon

The Godfather is a masterpiece
9.99999/10

It would get a perfect score if it didn't contain the fakest movie punch ever.

I also watched the Irishman last week and loved it

Al Pacino is the best actor ever. If you've seen Scarface, just watch the 2 Godfather movies and see how - even though it's a similar subject matter - the guy successfully plays two different people. The PS2 video game was good, too.

I haven't seen the 3rd movie or played the 2nd game, though.
