I been doing bjj for a few months and i was told that you cant sumbit someone from inside the guard.

Well our school has this really tall guy who pretty much doesnt even bother trying to pass guard. He tries key locks and kimuras from the guard, we keep trying to tell him it wont work. Because he is so tall he can lock in what ever move he is going for but cant finish. We reminded him again yesterday and he said he saw somewhere online that you could finish someone from inside the guard.

So can you?

Yes, you can.

Of course, you can also hop on the street like a bunny rabbit to get where you are going instead of walking. It doesn't necessarily make it the most efficient way to accomplish your goal.

Balto I would pay to read your posts. Spot on. Yes, you *can* submit someone inside the guard, but it's very inefficient and it requires a huge gap in both weight and skill for that to happen, not to mention that it leaves you open for a multitude of attacks and sweeps.

I've been hammerlocked a few times from inside my guard.

You can ezekiel choke someone in their guard. I have done this on occasion when I have been too tired to pass the guard, although once you have caught someone once with this you will probably never catch them again. Also the can opener, although this can be countered by opening one's legs

It takes a size and strength/technique advantage.

One of our biggest guys choked a guy out while in his guard in competition, if that answers your question.

When a guy gets frustrated in my guard and tries a kimura, I usually get their back. I've had a guy attempt a keylock on me when I was underhooking him... I got out and I usually just go for overs now.

if he puts his weight forward and is trying to get a submission, sweep his ass. That is the only way he will learn.

But yes ezekiels can be done from when your inside someones guard.

Either he is a fucking retard who never got a move working and still keeps doing it. Or you guys are shit and can't use his mistake to sweep him/work against his long arms going against ur arms.

If he is a retard then just work on new techniques on him. If you guys can't take advantage of his mistake then learn how to do it.

Ezequiel can be done inside the guard, but as people mentioned, its hard to do because

1.- You cant combine with anything.

2.- You need massive good stacking or you are risking being swept.

3.- Your opponent can attack you with everything.

a guy at my gym won Worlds (master white belt division) last year with 3 straight ezekiels from inside the guard... He learned his lesson though... at another tournament he hit 2 ezekiels and in the 3rd match he went for it again and got arm barred into oblivion. now he only goes for it when someone is in HIS guard lol.

anyways, as mentioned, yes you CAN but you leave yourself open for attacks and sweeps galore

oh you meant people in general. I thought you were asking me directly. ok I revise.

Other people: yes they can be submitted form inside their guard.
Me: no, I can't be submitted from inside my guard. Yes I'm that good. :)

I used to get hammerlocked in my guard by this one wrestler

but then I learned jiujitsu

There was actually a sherdog move of the day once, showing an americana from inside the guard. The instructor on the video actually referred to it as a "kimura" though.

Seemed pretty bunk to me. That being said Ezequiels do work within the guard. It's not a goto move that I use, but I hit it regularly on people, if they're aggressive about breaking my posture down and then trap me like that. The move is practically handed to you. You do need to post up on your feet though and drive down/stack if you're committed to getting this though.

yeah i been working on my sweeps, we're both white belts but he is heavier, stronger, and much taller than i am. im better then he is at most things just my technique isnt great to the point where it will beat his physical advantages

It works. You guys give it a try next time your'e rolling. You can it a hammerlock or a kimura from pretty much anywhere, the problem is torqe efficiency.

tell him to fucking stop and learn some fucking jiujitsu. seriously.

just because you can submit someone from inside the guard doesn't mean you should try to. it's low percentage. very low percentage.
