can someone recommend a cheap, reliable and simple heart rate monitor?

I use the Nike Triax. The older models are a bit cheaper, between 80-90 or so.

The polar B1 is 45 dollars (though I remember paying 60 dollars for mine). I wouldn't hurt for you to do a little looking around before assuming they're all 100+ dollars.

I have a polar and love it...It's nice taking my dog out for a jog and being able to see if Im in my target zone...

they're all in the hundreds though... is that as cheap as they come?
just like anything else, there are loads of items in many price ranges. I got a cheap polar from a local sporting store for $50.

I do want a super $$ badass one eventually, mainly because I love datalogging whether its for my car, or tracking my workouts and uploading them into graphs.

I'm with you on that one...I'm a datalogging freak...whether it is my workouts, my car, or the network at work I keep logs on everything (I even watch my webalizer stats for my website daily).

I got a polar and love it. I got the $110 version. I wanted to get the next model up (F11) but it was out of stock so I settled for a cheaper on.

I use a Polar heart rate monitor, in the Exercise Physiology labs at my school, we mainly use Polar heart rate monitors. HR monitors is what Polar does. But know that "cheap" is relative with HR monitors. Any one that is accurate will not be cheap. Most are a little over $100.

One bonus I found with my Polar is that it works with Precor Fitness equipment. ie the treadmill at the gym recieves the signal and registers my HR w/o me having to hold the metal strips. The only drawback is that it also registers on the treadmill next to me. DOH!!
