Can someone explain how did Conor McGregor become so popular?

Sufficiently advanced promotional tactics are indistinguishable from magic.

That gif gets me every time. He's so happy there. Like a little boy at his birthday party.

I remember when he was still fighting on the local UK/Ireland circuit. The long and short of it was that at the time he was the only Irish fighter to be really exceptional on the scene, Joe Duffy was better at that point in time, but he had left MMA to pursue boxing. This meant that the Irish really got behind him by the time he got into the UFC with a lot of hype surrounding him.

When it became clear that he put on a great show in stand up fights and kept calling out Jose Aldo, the UFC deliberately built him up in a manner similar to professional boxers and gave him a path to the title in which he didn't have to fight a single wrestler, until Aldo pulled out with rib injuries and was put in against Chad Mendes. Essentially, Conor was built up in the UFC to look unstoppable by very clever match making, and the novelty of him being that one Irish superstar from a small country, meant that they all REALLY got behind him.
