Can Edgar do it

should have named this thread "Yall really have no clue who Frankie Edgar is do you?"

He's got a viable path to victory, but I'm thinking like one with a 25 or 30 percent chance of success considering Frankie's been on the physical decline for the past several years and given Holloway's game. That path would probably be heavy pressure and phase shifting out of the gate and a takedown leading to damage early. But it would be a very hard fought fight that would test Edgar's durability I think.

X-factors at this point: If the damage Holloway has taken in the past few fights will catch up, how he does cutting back down to FW, if Frankie can reopen the cut Holloway got in the 4th his last fight (I think this would be pretty big as the cut cost Max the 5th due to lack of sight), and whether or not Holloway's issue with wrestlers in the past is a stylistic thing he can't overcome (style matchups never changing isn't uncommon).

Of course he has a shot. Not many fighters are as game as Frankie. I think he will struggle at range, but if he can have success with wrestling early, it could make the fight play out differently.

Edgar is 37 or 38 and has been injured multiple times recently. I would have liked his chances 5 years ago but I would side with Max by decision.

It's a tough fight for Frankie. He's the smallest FW fighting the biggest FW. War Frankie!

No. He got beat up against aldo recently who got schooled by Max twice. Max also just crushed a ground specialist in Ortega who has more length to him. Easy win for Max, 1-2 rounds maybe.

No

Most overrated fighter ever, he has 1 win over bj penn and thats it

I’ve never seen a guy old as Frankie evolve into something better that would overcome the text he is about to take.
His inactivity is a much bigger problem than his age. Ive seen boxers over come it, but usually have stayed going.

Seems like a 50/50 fight to me. Depends on how age has affected Edgar and how good current Maxes take down defense actually is when he is going against a good wrestler. Two things I don't know.

Pretty much how I see it

Edgar needs to use kicks at range, preferably leg kicks. Max is very open to leg kicks and max himself won't likely kick much against Frankie because Frankie is well known for catching kicks and getting takedowns off them.

Yes I was thinking that Frankie should try and mix in kicks so that he can attack Max from range before entering into the pocket. Frankie does sometimes kick the legs and he loves to throw combinations, so this would be a good strategy. He used some kicks well against Aldo but he got away from that strategy. Frankie also does try to catch kicks and turn them into takedowns.

Who are you picking?

Absolutely, I don't get this idea that Edgar has no chance, people were acting the same way about Dustin being an easy fight for Max too.

Edgar couldn't take down the shell of Cub

Edgar has zero chances, horrible mismatch

Frankie landed a ton of solid leg kicks against cub in his last fight, too, so i hope he implements them against max to shut down Max's jab.

Brain says max wins, but I see paths for Edgar to win and I kind of have a gut feeling that he might pull off the upset. I'm not sure how max deals with Frankie's movement, cardio, and ability to mix things up.

hopefully max retires him. He's had enough title shots and is way too small for 145. The fact he became the 155 champ being only 5'6" shows just how shallow the division was at the time.

A win for him would be terrible. Guarantee Cejudo calls him out if that happens. They could do the fight at 135 (edgar could become a 3 division champ), or 145 (cejudo could be come a 3 division champ for the ultimate cringe).

He did actually. It was a pure stand up fight.

I am hoping Frankie wins, but I think he has to fight a really well thought out fight to get it done. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get Max down. The last wrestler outside of Lamas Max faced was Bermudez, and although I think Max was robbed, he did have some issues. I would have expected him to have improved his TDD, and his ground game looks pretty good to me, but we really have no idea if he can stopping Frankie’s takedowns and then get back to his feet.

I think it comes down to whether Max can control the range. If he can, then I expect Frankie to really struggle to set up his takedowns and I think he will get picked off. So like you said, hopefully Frankie mixes in low kicks to cause Max problems and give him more things to think about.

I’d go with Max via competitive decision, but like you, I am not counting Frankie out at all. It just feels to me like his time might have just passed in terms with of being able to beat a young, improving champion like Max.
