The only reason I decided I want to take up hunting is because friends of mine had me over for dinner last year and served a bunch of birds they shot (Quail and Grouse). Some of the best food I've ever had in my life and I want to be able to get my own.

I live in lower NY state (parents live in NJ), had my Firearms ID for over a decade now but only shoot pistol at the range

What steps should I take to be able to get Legal for hunting as well as Trained for hunting birds here?
None of my friends hunt, so should I seek out a guide?
Would I realistically be able to get in by this season, or wait until next?

thanks in advance for any information and advice

Not sure about NY state, but if they have a hunter’s safety course it’s a good start.

As far as the hunt itself, if you’re going for grouse i recommend a 410 or a 20 gauge with 7 1/2 shot. Get on some forums and see if you can connect with someone. There are always people looking for hunting buddies, and the bonus is that they may know a good spot on private land.

Just had game pie from the local butcher's shop for dinner, hands down the best hot water crust pie I've ever had.

I've got a few friends that shoot game, but I've not been myself yet.

There's hunting groups for novices all over. See if there's anything near you. If not, ask the game warden for advice.

You gotta get a shotgun. It's got a good spread!

I’d ask the friend how they got started

Kind of weird your friends shot all these birds but none of them hunt

Oh ha I was like wtf... i would google it every area is different . You probably have to take a course then get a license ... they have different seasons for diff kind of animals as well. Can’t just go out and hunt whenever

Go to your local Bass Pro shop or Cabellas.

You "buy" a weapon and you shoot it at "a bird" and then you "pin the murder on some hapless stooge."

If you "know what I mean."

Yeah I just registered for the hunter safety course.

I guess I'm looking more for info on the technical aspect of actually hunting birds, forget the paperwork crap I can figure that out

let's say i do the class, get my license, etc....what now?

someone gave me a suggestion for the type of gun/ammo to use (thanks)
what do I do after I have all that covered and I want to go on my first hunt?

is a guide in order?

Jump like hulk with knives in your hands and hope to hit a bird

Like are you asking where you can hunt? Do you know anyone with private land? I’d ask at the course what state owned land people can hunt on
