I should start off by saying I don't live in the states and Canada is not that different but "motherfucker" is not really something people casually call each other around here and if they do it usually escalates quickly from there.

I notice in the states people call each other "motherfucker" or "bitch" fairly loosely and sometimes even through regular conversations, and not just teenagers, I'm talking grown men well into their 30's and 40's. I bring it up because in the last few UFC events first Edmond got a kick in the gut from Werdum for saying it, and last weekend Alex Oliveira taunted Will Brooks after knocking him out for the same reason.

I was just wondering how common this is, and if Americans consider it overly offensive?

Nate Diaz called whole arena and viewers across the globe motherfuckers

I liked it

it's like any insult; if i call my mate a bitch it's done out of love, but if i call a stranger a bitch, we may fight.

surely there is an equivalent in Canada, eh hoser?

i remember an epic thread years ago before Mask died and Tapout was getting huge, someone said he'd spent lots of time in the Pen, and calling someone Punk Ass was an instant fight and he couldn't understand how someone could call themselves that. i suppose context is everything.

In the States in the fifties, it was a term jazz players used to describe other musicians who were especially gifted.
"That trumpet player? He's a real motherfucker, ain't he?"

I live in canada and toss around "cunt" like its going out of style. Quit being a conservative SJW bitch, you motherfucker

Conservative SJW?

Aren't those usually liberal?

Well I live in Canada as well, in Toronto so I'm not sure where TS lives, but I would say that "motherfucker" is used pretty much the same as it is in the US here. It's not some word that's gonna set somebody off really. If they were gonna fight you, "motherfucker" wasn't the tipping point, you know what I mean? It really isn't any different than calling someone an asshole. And it's often used as a term of endearment or whatever, like how Nate used it.

Now there is a word that's used up here, that is considered "fighting words": goof. Don't call a guy a goof unless you're prepared to fight him. Seems weird I know, since it's such a silly word. Dana would be getting in scraps all the time up here. But it originated in prison and it basically means child molester. I've seen guys catch beatings over using that word.

It only means the person is mad at you for doing his mom.

its one of the most commonly used words when people are heated..... the only word used more in Scotland when someone is heated is "cunt".... but thats probably the most used word in Scotland so that doesnt count lol

Canada should be another USA state

The whole globe understands that motherfucker isn't a direct attack at someone's mother in 2016

Unless you grew up in a hut
It was a weak excuse on wannabe cowboys part

oh i guess ur right, SJW isnt really in scope here we are just talking about foul language. I dunno i find most ppl that get upset over foul language are the most conservative, religious types. Im liberal as fuck as swear like a sailor

Never use currency symbols to censor swear words...Economists find it overly offensive.

Ironic, of the 4 people TS references only 1 is American. Yet he asks specifically about America.

If you haven't fucked any mothers you're either very young or on Sherdog too much time in the day. Mothers fuck. Their kids are proof of that. Many of them have learned things about fucking too. And many of us want to find out some of what they've learned. So call me motherfucker all you want.

PS - I'm not American.

Calling someone a punk in prison (or frankly just amongst low-class ghetto people) is a pretty quick way to start a problem.

I'm in the construction business, I swear plenty and I'm not at all offended by it. I use the word motherfucker myself too, but not in that context, I don't call people bitch or motherfucker... again I'm not overly sensitive but it just doesn't seem right, doesn't sound good, at least to me.
