When did this terrible trend start? These days a fighter gets one impressive win and calls for a title shot, or a champ loses and gets a bounce back win and does the same. I don’t remember this happening 10-15 years ago or maybe it’s just worse now? It seems like fighters have realized the UFC isn’t really a meritocracy and they’re exploiting it.

It’s annoying as fuck.

Yes, I know why it happened, but still.

I'm not sure when it started, but it's been happening as far back as Dan Henderson vs Michael Bisping. That was pretty egregious matchmaking by the UFC. Some independent MMA rankings didn't even have Henderson in the top 10 at the time.

But why do people call for them? Because the UFC does this stupid shit. Just look at Jon Jones vs Stipe Miocic. If unranked Stipe Miocic that hadn't fought for over 3.5 years can get a title shot, why shouldn't everyone call for one?

The only way to fix this problem is for the UFC to stop placating fighters and prioritizing short-term money, and restore the integrity of the sport.

It depends if the UFC wants it or not, not by merit or actually earning it but if you're a bigger draw or can appeal to a market the UFC wants

Terrible example, Bisping must be your favorite. Dan was 2X champ in Pride FC and how'd that fight end up?

What the shit are you talking about? I can't stand Bisping and I was cheering for Henderson. But Bisping was the champion and should have had to fight Romero.

Dan was 46 years old and ranked outside the top 10. Henderson had no business getting that title shot, regardless of the fact that he nearly beat Bisping.

Are you getting confused with their first non-title fight that Henderson won???????????????

Brock Lesnar was the first real problem of this. UFC gave Brock an undeserved title shot instead of Werdum
Brock was at least coming off a win.

Chael was coming off a loss in the weight class below.

i remember brandon vera talking his shit way to early in the ufc back in the day but the clip basically boosted his entire career up until the end.

It's happening more often because I believe(I am throwing it out there, no concrete proof) fighters who are in the top ten negotiate for a title shot. I think the UFC would rather give an unwarranted title shot, instead, of paying them their actual value. So, if the fighter wins the belt. The only get a bump in salary if they're champions.

Now I don't think it's everyone just a select few. I do believe that's why some fighters get one win and they get an instant title shot.

Not to mention the Mir-Nog TUF/Interim stuff they had going on, though I can understand they were more screwed out of Randy's timing issues.
