to math metal fans, which album do you prefer? Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity or Ion Dissonance - Breathing is irrelevant? We could say Meshuggah are the real godfathers of the genre but to me Calculating Infinity brought it to a more extreme level, then Breathing is Irrelevant just blew the doors off IMO. Personally I go with 'Breathing is Irrelevant' but on the whole I enjoy DEP more.

Calculating Infinity is the first "math metal" album I ever listened to and enjoyed so it has a special place in my heart.

Meshuggah Destroy, Erase Improve was the first one I got but thought when Calculating came out it surpassed it. It was different, more car crash sounding and the vocals are insane. It was my favorite album for a few years. I then thought Ion Dissonance did the same with Breathing. I don't think any bands in the genre have came close to those three albums. Car Bomb is good but those 3 albums are my favorite in the genre, and Breathing is Irrelevant being my number one.

man this is a great question and a tough one to answer. for me it's breathing is irrelevant

i dont like this style of music at all. Style over substance...

Id rather a guy can barely play his instrument with passion, than this "look how hard this shit is to do" off the rails stuff you can barely call songs.

This style of extreme metal is definitely not for most people, it's a niche genre, lucky if there's more than a hundred people at the shows. I've been to metal shows with like 15 people there. I started out as a young lad super into metal, Sepultura, Metallica, Eyehategod... So by the time I hit 18 my taste preference grew more and more extreme, I can fall asleep to these albums now. Everyone's entitled to their opinion but no one can pretend the musicians aren't talented. I understand people not enjoying these bands because they're the exact opposite of accessible, but I can get down on some musical masturbation.

there are some bands like Lykathea Aflame, and Deathspell Omega's Fas,Ite.. album where its obvious this band has alot of talent to make music i like...but they just are doing things in a way i dont like... but i never felt the connection to bands like Meshugga and so on...yes its hard to do...its just not enjoyable for me personally. If there has to be some kind of masturbation i rather it be few and far between. I guess i can dig Necrophagist...but i still feel like those are still songs that make sense, even if its some seriously crazy tempo changes,i dont get..frustrated by it,if that makes sense.

Oh yeah, it makes complete sense and I understand. It kind of annoys me with bands like BTBAM, all musical masturbation without any actual song structures, no songwriting ability. I have that issue with a lot of bands but not really with those albums. Now Meshuggah actually writes songs alothough the structures are odd. Now I absolutely love Necrophagist, while they do have their moments of masturbation they're actually great songwriters. Now they need to make another album!
