These guys today are overtraining and their careers are much shorter. The guys in the old days fought more and trained less. Today guys train more and fight less and leave their career in the gym. Fedor had 23 fights in 4 years and 11 more fights at the highest level after that. Cain has had 16 fights in 10 years and is about to undergo back surgery and who knows if he will even have 20 fights in his career.

These guys today need to spend less time killing themselves in training and fighting more.

Excellent point. Fighters today are having their careers in the gym and over thinking things. Michael Bisping said he had one of the best fight champs of his life against Rockhold because he didn't overthink things. He just had to work on just a few specific things and then go in and fight. No overtraining, no injuries, no mental breakdowns, no ridiculous 3 month training camps.

These guys already know how to fight. Why would you train for 3 months straight for a fight that is going to last a maximum of 15-25 minutes? Just stay in decent shape all year, have a one month camp at the very most and get in there and fight. You don't need to train for every fight like it's your first.

cain would not have been as good as he was in the short time he was good if he didnt train like a mad man

How would you know if he is overtraining or not? The few clips that you see on youtube doesn't give enough evidence for your theory?

It's a pretty good assumption though, AKA injury prone, plenty of footage of him doing crazy training routines which can very easily damage the body, but he's not getting any younger either so it will take it's toll more so now than 3-4 years ago.

AKA depresses me. All of their stars over the past few years have suffered really serious injuries. Cain, DC, Rockhold and Khabib pulling out really sucks.

It's true, old days guys like Hughes would fight every few months. He didn't do that beating himself into the ground in camp from day 1 to day whatever. Nowadays guys won't fight unless they have long 8-10 week camps in which they often get hurt and pull out..

Cain is a dud and if DC isn't careful his career is going to be exactly the same.

I don't know about Cain, but DC said for the Jones II/Anderson fight he tried to train more restrained/safer and didn't like it. He didn't feel like himself. So going forward he's going to go full force again. Then he got injured out of AJ.

MMA training is still too blue collar. All about hard grueling training and full contact sparring. Needs more touch butt for longevity.
