Speaking with MMA Fighting on Sunday afternoon, Cachoeira’s manager Tiago Okamura said that the flyweight didn’t suffer any facial fractures, but did injure her right knee early in the bout.

“She tore her meniscus and ACL in the beginning of the first round, the first time they engaged, and it went all downhill from that moment,” Okamura said. “We couldn’t do anything.”

Cachoeira will visit Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (CABMMA) medical director Dr. Marcio Tannure in Rio de Janeiro this week to schedule her surgery. There’s a chance she might not compete again in 2018.

Cachoeira’s coach and cornerman Giliard Parana explained to MMA Fighting why he didn’t throw in the towel after he was informed of the injury — or at any moment of the second round.

“We didn’t know how serious the injury was,” Parana said. “If we knew, I think we would have stopped it, but we only knew when we went to the hospital. She was in pain, she got hurt in the first exchange, and told me in between rounds that she hurt her knee but I told her to shut up. I was trying to make her stop thinking about that, but I had no idea how serious it was. If I knew it, I would have stopped it. We thought she would be able to fight all three rounds.”

“‘Pedrita’ is fearless, she would never quit. She never considered quitting. The world hasn’t seen the real ‘Pedrita’ fight. They saw an injured girl fighting the best pound-for-pound female fighter in MMA, Valentina Shevchenko. Maybe she would lose even if she was 100 percent, but the fight would be a bit better.

Nothing but respect for Cachoeira, but she needs to drop that team, fast.

Just when I thought I couldn't be any more disgusted at her corner for sending her back out for the second round

during a competition that is what coaches do.

gymnastics and ice skating is even worse tbh.

All the drug abuse. Weakens ligaments/bones, makes you less durable.

The difference is if you're doing gymnastics or ice skating injured there isn't a chance your opponent could beat you to death because you can't defend yourself

She's definitely a tough girl. I'll give her that. I remember her in the corner after the first telling them to put ice on her knees. I'ts really up to her corner and/or Mario to stop that sooner.

I heard her saying something about her knee to her corner after the first round.

Her coach replied:
Don't worry about that, keep fighting.

Nothing but respect for that girl.
Overcame crack addict and took a beating of her life without quiting.

damn, that's tough. coaches are infallible too. and we want our coaches to push us. and often they push us knowing we're hurt, but not too hurt.

this coach knew she was hurt, but didn't know she was too hurt.

fine line. there is no answer here (other than 42 of course); just a lot of second guessing all around.

i wouldn't blame her for wanting a new coaching staff after this incorrect decision on the fly in the heat of the moment, but i also wouldn't blame her or be surprised if she didn't.

Wow she is incredibly tough, gonna ruin a decent career for her with a night like that alone. Trainers and ref be ashamed, Cacho just too durable..

I disagree.
Hindsight is 20-20.
he acknowledged the mistake, but if it was that serious she should have tapped. She didn't.

It's the corner's job to recognize when a fighter is being too tough for their own good. There's no stigma on throwing the towel in boxing, there shouldn't be in MMA. You never hear an MMA corner genuinely concerned about their fighter's health, it's always "Forget about it! You're a warrior! Get out there!".

Before long it will result in a high profile tragedy/death.

I feel bad for her. She needs a better team!

There was nothing wrong when she threw that horrible first punch.

So what? I never said that she is an elite striker. I only said that her knee was hurt. If you can understand portuguese just listen to her talking to her corner.

I recall Cachoeira wincing early in the fight when she took a leg kick. At that moment I thought she would be finished with leg kicks but she gutted it out and took an epic beating. Tough woman.

I am glad Shevchenko made a statement out of the fight even it if came with a bloody, smashed, opponent. This fight was made in many ways to showcase Shevchenko and she delivered.

Too bad Cachoeira had visa problems and missed her then planned fight with Lauren Murphy at the TUF finale. Murphy was probably going to win that one too but at least it would have been more competitive.
