Who's gym has them? In my teen years I went to a gym with multiple platforms and a slew of rubber weights, but was too dumb to get into olympic lifts. Now the gym I work at does not have either and it absolutely blows. Olympic lifts are my weakness I believe and not having the proper equipment is a pain in the ass. Having to slowly put the weight back on the floor alone takes a lot of energy. Infact, since I moved to georgia, I haven't been in a single gym that does have and oly set up. What do you guys use??

For the most part, I work out at my universities gym, and they do not have bumper plates or platforms (but they do have rubber plates).

However, I did recently discover a YMCA that is a 15-20minute bus ride form my house with platforms and bumpers, and an even closer garage gym that's about a 5min bike ride away. Likely going to sign up at the garage gym for the summer and receive coaching.

similar problem here it's actually making me think about ponying up 600 dollars for four 55 pound pendlay bumpers from amazon(Free shipping).

The confidence of being able to drop the weights without damage is great with bumper plates. I feel more comfortable jerking much more weight when I know I can fail it without breaking shit.

this is my problem as my family rents a house. i cannot fail and drop the weights damage the floor and ruin my weight set.its starting to get to the point where i cannot make any progress because if i fail i am fucked.

Yeah. I made a thread a while back about back injuries etc. The reason i made that thread is because I let a snatch get to far infront of my (my form was aful that day) and couldn't simply drop it, so I had to try and hold onto it and something in my back gave. I really want to do more oly lifts, but absolutely hate doing them without bumper plates. maybe i'll just buy a few and stash them at the gym.

EDIT: I apologize for starting a thread about oly lifts without a Dimas pic

I think maybe 1/3 to 1/2 of my gym's weights are bumper plates. I think the reason there's so many is (1) that way the metal plates can be locked up so that idiots can't use them, and (2) Metal plates don't get used on the new platforms. I don't do much in the way of the olympic lifts, they're not a priority for me right now. I do like being able to drop weights if necessary, though, since most of my squatting is done without safeties.

I'm so glad I go to an old school gym with seven platforms and six squat racks with plenty of bumper plates to share :icon_twis

$100 cheaper--was thinking of getting these.

if you have the money right off the bat hell yeah i would get them. but i was thinking of just buying the pendlay ones because of the free shipping and for two pairs i get 220 pounds. i can then also buy a pair of them separately which is extremely helpful.

lets say i have two of the 2 of the 55 pound plates on each side would i be able to use some of my old weights that cannot be dropped on the floor ?

My gym has bumper plates. They are not the best, but Olympic lifts are welcome at the gym. It is rare to find a gym in my area of NJ that houses platforms and bumpers. During the summer months I have trained at a local college that is home to the FDU Devils weightlifting team, they of course have great equipment.

bumper plates are larger than traditional weights so they will cushion the fall when you drop them.

The problem is that they are said to wear out much faster if they are the only ones absorbing the force from the drop; and you really don't want to have to buy new bumpers in a year or two. Using a full set of bumpers is recommended for this reason; you pay more upfront but they will definitely last longer.

man, I am totally spoiled in this regard. there are bumper plates where I go. (City leagues for professional athletes and I get access because I am a professional chess player). It's usually empty and very few people even know how to do olympic lifts. I am still learning the techniques so I am still not there yet.

HOWEVER. FUCK, MAN, you live in the USA. You make money. I don't care how much debt you have or what kind of situation you're in you can always make money in the USA and simply buy some plates and get free shipping. I know it sounds strange but when you live in a 3rd world country and you can't fucking buy anything from overseas because shipping and importation fees will triple even quadruple the price then you know how awesome the USA is.

Just buy those plates. You are a trainer and it'll be an investment for you as a brand. You need to be premium and oly lifting will separate you from the rest.

I'm kind of envious of you for being a professional chess player. I admire intelligence greatly

Just to clarify, they're the same size as 45s.

450mm in diameter.

you're right. My old gym also had thicker larger rubber weights that could be used with metal free weights on the floor. not sure what they're called.
