MPs have voted in favour of the creation of babies with DNA from two women and one man, in an historic move.

The UK is now set to become the first country to introduce laws to allow the creation of babies from three people.

In a free vote in the Commons, 382 MPs were in favour and 128 against the technique that stops genetic diseases being passed from mother to child.

I dont know how I feel about this shit. I just thought Id read what other people think, because I have to question it, and Id like to get an outside perspective.

Something about it just seems..wrong :icon_neut

Who are the political activists or lobbyists that push this stuff I wonder?

It seems like a strange thing to gain political traction.

Poses an interesting (and creepy) question..

If it prevents children being born with life-threatening diseases, I'm all for it.

Before people get carried away the name of the technique is misleading. While Mitochondria has DNA its not the traditional type people think of that controls looks, intelligence etc. The two parents DNA is still controlling the way the child turns out. Think of this more like a liver, heart, kidney transplant. It's not the designer baby technique the media is pushing.

It was a free vote that means MP's could vote independently rather than along party lines. In other words there was no political agenda here bar the same agenda that went with transplants, key hole surgery and all the other medical techniques that save lives everyday.

The fact that we are nothing but extremely complicate machines made out of carbon unsettles you? well no shit.

A lot of people claim to be atheists, but when presented to the reality of a godless world they feel overwhelmed.

the only "progress" for those people is abomination after abomination.

Yeah....that's not what just happened though, pretty sure you meant "Christian" or "Religious" though...otherwise your sentence doesn't make sense :icon_neut

i dont see how this is controversial unless youre religious.

Looks like a good thing to me. Obviously some ethical concerns, but there are ethical concerns about NOT allowing it too.

So whats exactly feels wrong about it?

I don't think your basic science and reasonable explanation of the actual situation is going to belong in this thread judging by the first page. Let's just agree that this horror is clearly against the will of (the) G/god(s) and is clearly another perversion of nature by evil (likely communist/lizard person) science and be done with it.

Cant quite pinpoint it, my discomfort with it doesn't come from any religious beliefs I hold either, (although I feel it probably should). It's just weird, I honestly think this wil set the stage for even weirder things in the future using science, like designer babies and super soldiers :icon_neut

This stuff scares me.

Glad im not alone. I felt similar when they started that "super collider" thing too...It's a different kind of scary too. Something about these things just irk me

You remind me of my ex that called meat, dead animal flesh. It sounds objective but we are not machines. machines are tools, which suggest purpose. A godless world is an assertion that superimposes a verdict on a question mark.

Its like you are asserting man over nature and man over god.

I would say we are organisms, and we are in a universe we dont even understand. The concept of a universe is a man made tool for reaching up at something we cant grasp.

Even the idea of us as organisms, ignores the fact that independence is somewhat illusory.

It has the panoras box potential to alter what humanity actually is.

Isn't the Mitochondria just the energy for the cell? The nucleus is where the good stuff is stored.

I think the ethical concerns are with the donor nucleus being discarded? You'll have to forgive me for any misunderstandings, cell biology was an elective I elected out of :P

How is this different than, say, an atheist with an aversion to murder?

You seem to be presuming that atheist is the same as nihilist.
