"Josh Thomson's latest UFC run has come to end.

According to sources with knowledge of the situation, the UFC declined to offer Thomson a new contract once his most recent one expired following his loss to Tony Ferguson last month. As a result, Thomson is close to finalizing a new deal with Bellator MMA, which would reunite him with his long-time promoter Scott Coker. That new contract is expected to be announced in the coming days.

The 36-year-old Thomson (20-8, 1 NC) is currently on a three-fight losing streak following his unanimous decision loss to Ferguson on July 15. Prior to that defeat, he dropped two split decisions to Benson Henderson and Bobby Green. Thomson returned to the UFC in April 2013 after a nine-year hiatus with an impressive TKO win over Nate Diaz, which earned him a title shot, however, he missed out on that opportunity after then-champion Anthony Pettis pulled out of their title fight due to an injury.

The former Strikeforce lightweight champion, who fought for Coker under the Strikeforce banner for six years, is considered a pioneer in the lightweight division. He went 2-1 in the UFC between 2003 and 2004 prior to the organization originally dissolving the 155-pound division.

No word just yet on when "The Punk" will debut with Bellator, however, it is worth noting that the promotion is holding an event in San Jose, which is where he currently lives, on Sept. 19."

I think he beat Diaz before he lost to BG. Poor reporting as always or my memory has gone to shit.

Another example of the UFC not wanting to pay out a decent paying contract so unfortunately we lose a top LW in the UFC.

I know he got busted up by Ferguson, but he's legit still one of the best fighters in the world. UFC are more interested in girls and midgets fighting, what a fucking joke.

I thought he beat Bobby Green. Benson and El Cucuy are tough

They don't wanna give Thompson a new contract but keep Diego Sanchez?

Thompson had close fights with Bendo that some think he won, a close fight with Green that some think he won and only clearly lost to ferguson.
Bendo is a former champ and elite, bobby Green is a very good LW especially against certain styles and ferguson is really talented and far from bad himself.
    This is just ridiculous

Damn. UFC should have kept him, WTF?

They're losing an exciting top ten LW to their rival promotion.

Good break for Josh. He'll probably make more at Bellator than in the UFC.

Right before his last fight with Ferguson, "They keep giving me these guys with no name. I want a big name. Big Fights." He definitely 100% underestimated El Cucey. He's not a top 155er anymore I guess that mean jump the ship.

I'm fine with this actually. Don't see him going any farther up in the UFC ranks. Him vs Chandler & Brooks are good fights.

Yeah he isn't going to be champion, but I'll bet he'll make more in Bellator so good for him.

LW is insanely crowded in the UFC and Josh has fallen way down the totem pole. Probably best for everyone if he goes to Bellator.

There are good fights for him there. Fights that wouldn't have happened had, he stayed. I'm excited for the future.
