Former Doña Ana County Magistrate Judge Joel Cano and his wife, Nancy Cano, were taken into custody after federal agents raided their New Mexico home. The two face charges of evidence tampering amid allegations they harbored Cristhian Ortega-Lopez, an alleged undocumented immigrant who is also suspected to be a member of Venezuela’s notorious Tren de Aragua gang.

But… why?
I think its because people are desperate to make some sort of mark, like they've made a difference. Even if its at the expense of everyone else, they can pretend to be someone. I think its hard to stand out from the crowd these days and that bothers some people more than others.
You see it all the time at protests and the like, where people can't even explain why they're there protesting. They just want to be seen cosplaying as a revolutionary.

Kind of hard to imagine what the middle ground is.
I don't necessarily think so, I think we've just strayed too far left and right. imo it's just years and years of propaganda/indoctrination on both sides. We can't continue to function like this as a country, with two "factions" taking turns trying to fuck the other one over. We need new leaders, we need a focus on unity and what's good for the heart of this country, ie the majority working class. I have no idea how we get there, but I certainly don't see it happening by us just flip flopping each extreme every 4/8 years.

"Cano’s resignation from the bench halted any formal disciplinary hearings, but in a 23-page letter submitted to the New Mexico Supreme Court, he denied any wrongdoing and said he was unaware of the men’s alleged gang ties. “Let me be as crystal clear as possible,” Cano wrote. “The very first time I ever heard that the boys could possibly have any association with Tren de Aragua was when I was informed of that by [the] agents on the day of the raid.

Cano referred to the three men repeatedly as “the boys” in his letter and defended his decision to allow them to stay on his property. He said they had previously interacted with Border Patrol and HSI without any issues, and that their immigration paperwork led him to believe they were not subject to removal.

“Their papers stated in the upper right-hand corner, ‘This Person is Not Subject to Removal.’ They each had a specific court date regarding their asylum hearing,” Cano stated.

Weird, seems like I've heard about this arresting people with Court papers saying they're not subject to removal before.

The initial allegations against Ortega-Lopez were due to firearms, and made by the ATF. Cited as evidence are social media posts showing he and Cano "with firearms."

"The Judicial Standards Commission also alleged that Cano provided the men with firearms. In response, Cano denied giving them access to weapons, referencing a family outing to a shooting range."

My favorite part of the allegations that Ortega-Lopez is a gang member list the first two indicators as "clothing" and "tattoos." Welp, Salvadorian gulag for that guy!

I was among the most pessimistic when it came to this 2nd Trump term but even I didn't expect Trump to be cracking down on judges by sending Feds to raid their homes barely 100 days in. We're barreling toward Banana Republic status faster than even the most vociferous critics could've imagined.

If he didn't do anything why did he resign instead of fighting. It's not like almost every democrat wouldn’t russ to defend him.

This seems to me to be more like a judge caught up in a tentative discrimination case. The most telling thing is the indicators of gang affiliation being "clothing" and "tattoos." Texts and voicemails are also listed, however they're listed after the first two. That leads me to believe that perhaps they saw texts or heard voicemails mentioning "Tren de Agua" and assumed it was due to affiliation with no in-depth investigation. Remember that whole "taking over apartment complexes" nonsense? Venezuelans IN legal processing who lived there were talking to local news about people coming to "secure" the building who kept harassing the residents because they essentially thought every Venezuelan there was a gangbanger.

What was that phrase the right started using in their "migrant crisis" hysteria? Oh yeah it was "Military-aged men." Pair that with a scary "clothes" and "tattoos" stereotype and you have a really good political boogeyman.

In skeptical because Cano was NOT shy about hosting these men. It was all over social media. For all we know texts and voicemails saying the words "Tren de Agua" that are all in Spanish could be people talking among each other about everyone thinking they're Tren de Agua. The pictures they have together look like normal-@ss photos of friends, but I notice a lot of outlets are using a mugshot of Ortega-Lopez where his hair is messy and you can see his neck tatts.

One of my students is an asylum case from Mexico (his Father was a Federale whose unit was targeted for assassination by Cartels, only he survived), he has neck tatts, loves guns, and works construction. So do both his Brothers.

Salvadorian gulag!!

The immediate tone in this thread demonstrates a bit of how sad and absurd we're becoming. From outright initial hatred to weird sexual fantasies as replies. Lol

To be fair I guess is not impossible that this judge is guilty of something untoward here but the numerous extreme claims of this admin virtually never stand up to scrutiny. They move quickly, break things, and make no apologies or own up to errors.

Not surprising at all. I live in New Mexico and it is a corrupt shithole, probably worse than the average corrupt shithole. Nothing will change here because it never does.
