I don't remember when Jones started using that kick.
But, back in 2008, on UFC 89 card, Vera was fighting Jardine. Midway through round 2, Vera accidentally lands an awkward kick to Jardine's knee that hurt him because of the extension in the wrong direction. At the time, Jardine was part of Jackson's camp. I don't think oblique kicks were popular yet, because the commentators didn't have a name for it.
Two years later and Jones fights Vera. I'm guessing Jones studied Vera's fights, including the Jardine one. Starting to think that's what influenced them to use the oblique kick.
