Legendary Irish boxer Steve ‘The Celtic Warrior’ Collins has heaped some lofty praise on his countryman ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor after visiting him at SBG Ireland early in the week, as he claimed that the Dubliner is the “greatest fighter Ireland has produced”.

In one of the definitive moments in Irish sport, already a WBO middleweight champion, Collins jumped up the weight ranks to defeat the seemingly unbeatable Chris Eubank for his super-middleweight title back in March, 1995. Fightland talked to Collins on the 20th Anniversary of the Eubank fight last year.

Knowing that McGregor will look to become the first man to hold belts in two UFC weight classes when he meets lightweight champ Rafael Dos Anjos on March 5, Collins is adamant that McGregor will be even better at the heavier weight class.

“I’ve met Conor a few times, but when I visited him ahead of this fight I was very impressed with his mindset,” he explained. “His preparation has obviously gone really well. He looks like a total powerhouse. I’m expecting to see an even better fighter than we saw in his last fight. I really feel like that extra weight is going to be a massive advantage to him.

“He’s definitely the best I’ve ever seen him since I began to follow his career. I know I haven’t been following him from the very early days, but this step up in weight is going to be a huge benefit for him. I’m ready to see a much stronger fighter next time out, and a better fighter.”

There was a guy called Jimmy McLarnin who beat 13 world champions during his career. Conor has a ways to go

He KOed Jose in 13 seconds. How in this world is he going to finish RDA faster?

i understand that is just a case of kinsman masturbation but this can turn up to be one of the greatest derailments in MMA story.
to much insane hype over a very talented fighter with STILL A LOT to prove.

ahh...i just hope we see a great fight.

Grew up watching Collins in the 90s, his chin was epic. He defeated Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank both, twice. Great fighter

McGregor probably did the same, no doubt it was a big honor for McGregor to meet Collins.

Same. Was watching the build-up to Collins and Eubank's first fight last night and a bit of the fight. Collins seemed to do a good job at psyching Eubank out, but Eubank didn't seem to fight like he was fazed.

That was a great little period of when there was some buzz around Boxing because of Eubank and the lead up to those fights.

I never understand why someone posts a good/decent post, but gets less likes than some a-hole who makes zero effort and posts a gif saying "didn't read".

On Sherdog a-holes flock together.

He must not know about James Quinn McDonagh or Big Joe Joyce back in the day lol, them dudes could scrap but that whole deal with that family is crazy the family fights each other in bare knuckle fights

I would never tell anybody about anything that was not interesting but search on youtube the documentary "Knuckle" or "Gypsy blood" 2 very interesting documentaries on the insight of traveler families
You talk about some mean people if they had MMA skills they would be something but not sure these type people can be controlled. You can say what you want about the Irish but they would literally rather fight than fuck

Should do a McGregor /Collins vs RDA/RJJ tag team match at UFC 200

He's just doing the old "you're the best ever"- "no, YOU'RE the best ever" and trying to get Conor to respond with just that line.

This guy is the original Conor Mcgregor. That's quite an endorsement. WAR Collins.

Sound like animals to me. It's 2016 and they live in a country where there's plenty of opportunity to better themselves so they don't have to have the next generation growing up in a van and fighting all day.

Before Conor embarked on mma he boxed at Steve Collins brothers gym the Celtic Warrior boxing gym. It explains why he had little mma experience at first but still managed to starch a few guy's until a couple of submission artists exposed him, forcing him to take grappling seriously.
