This seems like a good place to ask, I'm a complete amateur who only ever worked on a soft bag with gloves/wraps and all that.

problem is I got into a real fight a few months ago and due to my crap technique broke my hand (typical 5th metacarpal fracture)

Now I've seen a doc and he said it should be ok despite being angulated 30 - odd degrees, (he deemed surgery unnecessary) but I'm pretty pissed with the whole affair as I'm an artist/musician by occupation and need my hand as it was, I'm worried that it still aches 3 months after the break, but then I've never broken anything before so don't know how long to expect this feeling.

so, do any of you who've had this injury still get discomfort of nagging pains from this?
and can the knuckle get back into shape?

While Im no pro fighter, I have broken my hands several times. The last time, not long ago, my middle knuckle was huge for months. It hurt to squeeze my hand, or do anything for that matter, but it eventually got better.

Ive been in car accidents, completely broke my guitar playing hand, did not go to the hospital and things got better eventually. Today, I think I play guitar better than Ive ever played before. I still suck, but the worries Ive had that my hand was damaged beyond repair, a few times over, have never come to fruition.

I expect arthritis in the future, bad.

ive broken my left hand twice in fights and get aches when using it for long periods(playing guitar, writing etc etc)

as for the person who said about arthritis..that shit is heading your way no doubt, im in my early thirties and i get it already after breaking my hand 10+ years ago

Seems to be somewhat of a correlation between fighters and playing guitar.

oh, I was told I wouldn't get arthritis 'cause the fracture doesn't affect the joint, my whole hand swole up so bad (like a watermelon, same color too) that nothing would surprise me...

My lil brother was out 6 moths from a pinky knuckle fracture he sustained from sparring. Keep training! Become great with your other hand, keep hitting mitts! And as soon as you can work knuckle pushups into your regimen!

I'm not a fighter or anything, but I do hit bags. I like hitting hard bags with MMA gloves because it punishes you for bad technique. When your hand heals, try that.

same thing as you. Broke my 4th metacarpal and it set on an angle. Cant make a proper fist now, as my finger protrudes in a funny way due to the angle. Gives me trouble when i land a punch. Hurts frequently and generally is a total bitch, this is probably 7 years + after the event. I looked into getting it reset but the guy said surgery wouldn't really improve anything. It doesn't really give me much grief if i'm not boxing, although i tend to get aches a lot easier than i used to (eg. writing, typing, etc). My advice is if it's not too late, have it set properly now.

buddy, i'm a musican and fighter too, and this is one of the reasons I tell everyone to avoid this kind of mess. It's stupid and wasteful. The hand was not meant to hit a big round bone which is as hard as concrete. Anyway, my hands have hurt for months after fights, months, and it's possible that I suffered a fracture or seperation, I never had it looked at at the time. I used to do security and I'd get into all kinds of scuffles, fortunately, I think my hands held up ok, the pains I had, which I used to wonder if they'd ever go away eventually did. I don't know if all the hitting has damaged my hands or not, I know it hasn't helped my piano playing, that much is a fact. I don't think it's helped my finger agility or any of that. I'm older now, so I can say that those kinds of things are stupid, but if I were in a position again, I probably would either use grappling or I would use elbows, kicks and palmstrikes, a guy showed me how hard it is to break your hand using the heel of your hand, try it, hit a concrete wall and get a sense. These days if I have to, I'd do that, hopefully you also know, most people 99 percent are hapless in a streetfight so you don't need your A game, just get it over with without putting yourself in legal trouble or putting your own safety at risk. I'll tell anyone in a heartbeat, avoid trouble, it's not that hard, don't go to parties, don't go where guys are getting drunk and trying to impress females, stay away from psycho bitches and you avoid just about all issues.

The voice of experience. Well said. +1!

Fractured my hand/wrist about five months ago. I was just coming out of my garage when I decided to give it one random but very light dig. Don't know how it happened so easily like that when I often hit it without gloves sometimes. Went to the physio, she told me it was fractured, gave me nothing, refused a cast, told me to go ask my doctor. Went to my doctor, he gave me nothing, refused a cast, told me to go ring the hospital. Rang the hospital, am now on a 6 month waiting list to get a cast for a wrist fracture. I don't even know exactly what's wrong with me yet. Ireland's a great country.

Best tip I can give is to squeeze a hand grip and somekind of stress ball like object. My hand felt 60% better after the first day. At this stage after about 5 months it's about 90% better and I can hit the bag again with gloves on.

Anyone have any experience in rotating the metacarpal back? I have a fractured 4th metacarpal at the base, dislocated my 4th and 5th cmc joints also. i had kwires in then i tie my 3rd finger to the 4th one end up my 3rd finger now is angulated not before… sad

I fell on my hand ice skating and it's still sore 3 months later.

I fell on the other hand with my arm totally behind my back and my left front felt has been sore for 2 months.

I don't ice skate anymore.

sounds like a mess, never had anything that serious. I think the most typical "boxer's fracture" is the bone leading to the pinky getting broken.

originally my pinky metacarpal (bone in the hand) dislocated, the 4th had a base fracture, thus malrotated now. stupid me tied my 4th finger to 3rd finger, the 3rd metacarpal moved. the surgeon tell me as long its good function and he dont see the point to go for another surgery..
my grip strength decrease i feel because of the malrotated and hand easily sore because when malrotated finger hold the mouse its bad..sad

Probably a rotator cuff pull these take a long time to heal more small movements with it can encourage bloodflow and help
