The Russian Boxing Federation said light heavyweight contender Roman Simakov has died after collapsing in the ring.
Igor Maruzov, the general secretary of the Russian Boxing Federation, said Thursday Simakov, 27, died of brain injuries overnight Wednesday in a Yekaterinburg hospital after collapsing in the ring during Monday's title bout against Sergei Kovalev, RIA Novosti reported Thursday.
Maruzov said a probe has been opened into the boxer's death.
"I can only comment on the situation after the official investigation, which will evaluate the actions of the referee and the medical treatment the athlete received later," Mazurov said.
