From the Japanese manga All Rounder Meguru.
The setting of the most recent issues has been a BJJ tournament.

I never thought I'd see the day grappling would be credibly portrayed in a comic book. Just before the choke, the girl in the black gi gets a takedown by chaining sumi gaeshi off an uchi mata attempt. This is all carefully illustrated.

Even the depiction of the tournament atmosphere is credible. The next match is going to be the protagonist's BJJ instructor against the instructor of another gym. Drama!

You can pretty much find manga on any topic (art, cooking, sports, etc.), and they're generally very well researched.

But yeah, Meguru does stand out from other martial arts manga by being very realistic and showcasing real moves. It's really good.

I'm not into manga or anime or anything like that at all, but I happened upon this comic randomly, and It's pretty awesome! The understanding of body mechanics and technique (both striking and grappling) that goes into the illustration is out of control.

Sometimes it is obvious that the translators do not have grappling experience though.

i think we've been mainstream for awhile

Not really… People here might know about MMA, but few have heard of BJJ. Although the Gracies are pretty famous.

If I meet a Japanese person that hasn't heard of BJJ, I usually mention something about Pride, the Gracies, and/or newaza and the lightbulb usually goes off. :icon_chee At least that usually applies to any Japanese person older than 25 and younger than 55 or so LOL.

That's credible for a BJJ tournament?

Credible would be double guard pull and then someone gets disqualified for reaping.

legit lol.

I often feel shorted by the poor translations to English that you often get with various manga.

Or maybe I give the writer too much credit for the original dialogue...

Nice. Uchi Mata > Sumi Gaeshi is a sweet combination.
