Booking Jones vs. Stipe is just the UFC protecting Jon.

They can’t match him up with Francis since he’s likely leaving anyways.

Rather than matching Jon up with prime heavyweight contenders like Gane, Aspinall, or Blaydes, they give him the former champ who is old, inactive and got brutally finished his last fight.

Stipe isn’t even a draw either, so it’s not like booking him was a necessity from a financial perspective. The UFC is just protecting Jones. What will be interesting will be how he will avoid fighting the young killers once he beats Stipe. He’ll probably just retire I guess after this last payday.
 
Yes, there are harder fights for Jon than Stipe, but there also aren't any obvious contenders who deserve a title shot (whether interim or undisputed) right now. Blaydes and Aspinall each need another win, and I get the sense that Dana isn't pleased enough with Gane to let him scrap for any sort of belt for his next fight.

Jon vs. Stipe is also WAY more marketable than any of those fights. If Jon were to actually come back, beat Stipe, and get a belt, he's going to end up having to fight those other guys anyways.
 
I don’t like the fight either

Both guys haven’t fought in so long the fight tells us nothing

It’s probably the biggest fight they can make. They need other top HW for International cards coming up, as well. And if Jones were to win it’s way more legit beating the guy with the most defences as opposed to somebody that hasn’t held the belt yet.

It’s chickenshit of Jones, but makes sense for the UFC.

Yeah like...are they waiting for Stipe to qualify for Social Security 1st to give Jones best chance possible? Although Jones doesnt seem to want to fight anyone at all

he should fight stipe and wait for the francis fight or retire. whats in for him fighting gane ? lets be honest he has nothing to add to his legacy anymore.
 
Well considering Francis isn't fighting until early 2023 with is injured knee(if he comes back to the UFC) if they want Jones fighting this year than Stipe is very logical choice.

I have no idea.

I've pretty much given up trying to predict what's going to happen with Jon, and with this Francis debacle going on, the HW title picture is as obscure as it gets.

To prove he’s a legit HW?

By your logic he shouldn’t come back at all because there’s nothing to add to his legacy… I hate when people say that, more wins always improves your legacy. Especially in another division where you have proven nothing.
 
Get them fighting.

The optimal matchups aren’t as important as keeping the Top 5 Contenders fighting to establish primacy with fights this year — as eventually the Winners will rise and challenge for the iChamp Belt if not actual Championship.
 
I agree, Stipe vs Jones will sell the best, but Jones vs all the other HWs would be a bigger test. Honestly Ngannou vs Jones would be best fight at HW imo.
 
Stipe by TKO. This nonsense about Stipe being way passed his prime cause he lost to Ngannou is insane. Jones got outstruck by Reyes and couldn't out grappled a one legged Santos.
 
stipe is being VERY VERY underrated by a few here.


jons has NEVER fought at heavy, there are so many questions for him. can he handle being the smaller guy, will he have a giant amount of ring rust (hasnt fought in over 2 years at that point). can he handle being heavier, will he gas more, will he have less power, will he be slower, can he handle a real heavyweight shot.

if anything hes being fed to a lion in stipe.

stipe will be by far the biggest and most quality fighter he has ever faced..... Not one fighter jons has beaten has a better resume than stipe.
 
Stipe probably beats everyone on your list. Let’s be honest. No matter who they match him up with, you would be saying this.
