I always cringe when fighters block incoming punches with their gloves because the gloves are so small compared to boxing gloves for example

Is it a good defense to high guard up in mma gloves?

Originally martial arts taught to block in a way to actually try to break your opponents hands with the blocks. It likely comes from that.

Any examples?

It is has no predictive value on the outcome of sparring or fighting. When people get floored from dropping their hands its because they did it at the wrong time.

Sometimes playing it safe can be more dangerous than fighting on Instinct and hitting back. Like say you defend as if it was any other opponent and now your up against a world class guy, that will only put you in trouble. Better to punch back.

In my opinion you need to reach a high level in order to rely on defence. Footwork and circling will always work, But once he gets inside, it gets really tricky.

Reflexes, experience, fight IQ all play a huge part. Its not like you can just watch Floyd Mayweather and copy it. Thats harder than to just bang.

If mma gloves I block strikes with my shin

I never trained before

but I noticed boxing gloves are larger

let me make a thread about it

You can block with a rolling double guard. Like Rampage used to great effect back in the day.

Old muay boran uses the same way of blocking punches. And that was not made for big gloves.
