BJJ/Wrestling are some of the best martial arts for 1v1 self defense, but they are not so great for self defense in a crowd. Boxing/Muay Thai are best, as the following fight showed.

5 Boxers (UK) vs. 5 BJJ fighters (Brazil)

Agree/disagree? Discuss.

This is the dumbest shit ever lol. Although paulhares wins 5v1

Hard to go for mount or submission while getting kicked/punched in the face from his buddy on the ground...

Obviously.

Totally obviously.

In part because the average person does NOT know how to wrestle, so ones standup game is...everything.

Being able to throw devastating elbows and knees is soooooo vital, in part because it takes nooooo space.

I actually had a fight against 2 people (they were beating my bro) and I closed a kimura on the first, then the second one took my foot and I rolled on the ground to control his leg and sink a kneebar. (Bro got up and handled the first one)
None of us were trained and I think the guys were just surprised to see someone going for subs.
I'm not a big guy or used to fight so I would have probably gotten a beating standing up.

But none of you will believe this anyway so I'm not sure how useful it'll actually be to the conversation.

Best self defense is running

I believe you, but just curious, how were you able to get a knee bar on the 2nd guy, when you were tied up in a Kimura on the 1st guy?

I let go of the arm when the guy took my foot (as I had no angle) and my brother got hold of the guy, as in intervening I freed him and got all the attention.

Its takes a special kind of dumb to agree to these fights.

And yes you are correct. Going to the ground is a death sentence in a situation like this.

guy wrestling ko'ed the guy on bottom doe.

One of the BJJ guys got taken out right at the start so the boxers had a 2 vs 1 and from that point it just got worse for the BJJ guys.
I assume in this sort of fight whoever it is who takes the first opponent out wins.

Usually it takes a bit longer to get a sub so it makes sense.

Even if the other team was all boxers or Muay Thai fighters they wouldn't have done any better. As soon as one guy gets beat, the rest of his team is screwed in these dumbass fights. It would probably be pretty cool to see a big ass gang of guys fighting each other like in the outsiders movie but these teams of like 5 guys in one ring is just stupid

That looked like a football hooligan fight without the brass knuckles , chains and bats. At the end was like 6 of em on one poor dude and they still could not finish him. To call any of these guys fighters is a bit of a joke. Lets be real here. They were just thugs looking for 50 bucks and a free jersey. .

It all depends on the grappling art...bjj is probably the weakest here in this case due to its specialization and focus on ground rolling...but a strong judoka or wrestler could do fine...

Its the psychology of fighting that matters when a group fight ensues...for example if the muay thai koes someone from the grappler with the first strike he throws then itll strike fear into the grappling teams side...the same could be said if a wrestler pulls a frank shamrock to igor sanoiev and dummies the first guy who comes in striking and lays him out cold with a broken collar bone ..not too many guys are gunna wanna fight after seeing you do that.

Or lets say you judo throw someone for a k.o..or even wind him...again people are gunna take notice and maybe back offf...

Group fights are about mural and momentum not so much whos the most skilled

Who would disagree with this? LMAO those vids always give me a good laugh for some reason.

I think what this boils down to is it commonly takes longer to get a sub than a KO. Being the first team to have an advantage in numbers is key. KO's come faster than submissions(usually), therefore the team with better strikers is more likely to win. It's sort of interesting, a part of me wants to see team-mma evolve....
