I was reading on this forum that people pretty much all have been in competitions and I wanted to get into one. I live in Toronto so if anyone knows of tournaments around the gta area please let me know.
Thanks.

How exactly do no-gi divisions work? In Gi you can split it up by belt color, but how do you split up the no-gi divisions (apart from weight class)?

Generally they are done by belt level as well. So if you are blue in the gi you would be fighting in the blue belt division nogi. Grapplers Quest does it by experience level/months of training.

Some of the tournaments this year are:

Niagra Open April 14th
Ontario Open May 12th (this will be the biggest tournament of the year in Ontario)
Toronto Pro supershow June 2nd
Grapplers Quest June 23/24
Kombat Classic June 23/24 ( I suspect they might change it since GQ is now on the same days)

There will most likey be a few others such as Copa, Toronto Classic, Bravado.

Great, thanks guys. How is it for beginners? I've been training for maybe 6 months on and off and have beaten most people who have trained for the same time as me up until a year. I almost caught a brown belt in a submission, and beat a blue belt on points before in a roll. I'm just afraid I'll go and get absolutely wrecked in the first round and then will be out after the first round.

It basically boils down to how much you train, and how much the guys you wind up facing in your brackets train, to put it simply.

I learned a hard lesson of what "100%" means the first time I stepped on the mats in a tournament. Guys go hard. Harder than what you are probably used to if you are being "competitive" with higher belts.

Just go, do it, learn from it. Have fun.

Sometimes it depends on who you get matched up with in your bracket. More times than not it is a guy who is close to Blue that wins white belt divisions. Go out there, try and work your game and have fun.

Win or lose it will make you better... And get video so you can watch it after.

Thanks for the help. Now in tournaments if I lose my first match am I out? Or are there other matches?
Thanks.

There is a Montreal Grappling Experience this weekend where you are guarnteed 4 fights in gi and no gi but i'm pretty sure all tournaments run by OJA a are single elimination. Oh yeah, you will also need to pay $25 and get an OJA membership if you do one of their tournaments, they will have a booth there where you can buy it. And you will also have to buy one for any OGA run events, (grapplers quest, Naga)

Not necessarily - Niagara Open on April 14/15 is double elimination!

Sounds good. Thanks guys. I was watching some whitebelt competition and all they did was chill in peoples guards. I just need to focus on subs off my back and breaking guard and I should do alright.
