How different are they? What would you guys reccomend to start training? What are the good & bad points of both.

I was gonna start training BJJ No Gi. Then a few people said start Luta Livre its very underrated and better.

Confused!

it may very well be a moot point, considering that bjj is much more widespread

you will be hard pressed to find a LL gym of comprable quality outside brazil.

What he said.

But isn't LL similar to mma?

LL is probably more practical for self defense and mma imo.

Depends what you want to do

Luta Livre and GracieJJ had a big rivalry back in the old days that still went on for a while in other forms (Chute Boxe vs. BTT). Luta Livre was basically vale tudo style: basic bjj, leg locks derived from Sambo and CACC (since that was your only chance against a Gracie on the ground), and some kickboxing.

Nowadays LL doesn't really exist. At least not in the US, I don't know about Brazil. But it's a moot point because training LL is basically training MMA while training GJJ is training BJJ.

the main difference between bjj and LL is that LL is primarily no-gi, and commonly takes striking into account when teaching and and preforming moves, offensively and defensively.

but as mentioned, (and apologies in advance for reopening this can of worms), bjj was spread and marketed much better, and many top quality guys teach with bjj

Marco Ruas' gym in Orange County, CA teaches luta livre, though they don't really refer to it as such.

My guess is that it's basically just an mma gym with either a really old name that didn't update or perhaps Marco is just paying homage to his roots. Either way LL today = MMA. It's not really a pure style itself anymore.

On a side note, anyone else still bummed that Marco and Rickson never fought? Marco wanted that fight BAD.

well from a grappling perspective bjj is the obvious choice.
you are likely to be able to find quality instruction alot easier.
bjj is recognisdd through out the world.
more oportunity to commpete.

i wouldnt plan on training luta livre unless living in brazil permanently and even then only if you want to compete in mma

personally im still upset over the robbery vs taktarov in ultimate 95.

@MMA SLAM: Dude you live in vegas. If your planning doing no gi, go to extreme couture and take classes with Neil Melanson. Legit Catch as catch can wrestling and damn hard thing to actually find a school, much less a really good one.

You can't go wrong.

LL is pretty slick here in rio there is 1 big team and a few that derived from them.

Go with BJJ:
1. It will be WAY easier to find a quality, certified, and affordable BJJ gym than to find a Luta Livre gym with the same attributes.

2. Yes, Luta Livre is more like Vale Tudo. But if you want to learn MMA, go to an MMA gym. Again, its easier to find an MMA gym than a Luta Livre gym.

Crap, it's hard to find most anything outside of BJJ in most areas. I am from Maryland, and there is only like 2 Dojos anywhere in driveable8under 80mins one way) distance from my hometown. No Sambo, and no Catch. I have never seen a LL gym either. I mean if it's there, give it a try. Why not?

yeah, thats why MMA is full of LL and Catch guys... oh wait

I hardly think a style that teaches to sacrafice position in order to go for a submission is very practical for selfdefense... In a street fight, not getting hit>flashy leg lock...

nop....

LL is basically, no gi bjj... I think they have the same philosophy than catch, for what I understand, is a more agressive style of grappling than bjj...but they do sacrifice too much position, and that on a fight is not all that good (though I love to watch japanese catch wrestlers, they are the most exiting grapplers, Daisuke Nakamura being my favorite), thats why you always see records of catchwrestlers with huuuuge ammount of submissions, but also, lots of losses...

Oh. I was under the impression that they trained striking, takedowns, submissions and ground and pound. My bad.
