Hey!

I'll be studying in Richmond, London, from January to June, and I was wondering if there's any decent, low priced MMA or BJJ gyms in the area? I'm 17 years old, have trained Muay Thai for a year, did a bit of Judo as a kid, and started training MMA in August, until I broke my arm during an awkward landing during a takedown.

Thing is, since I live in Sweden, I can't really go to any tryout classes, and so I have no idea which gyms are good or not. If anyone knows anything about the local clubs, I'd be very grateful if they could share it. Have checked a few of them out on the interwebz, but it's rather hard to judge the quality of the clubs from their website.

carlson gracie in hammersmith is pretty close to you

Carlson Gracie London-BJJ, Muay Thai, MMA | Carlson Gracie

its where i train. i go and chill with my mate that lives near richmond afterwards usually cos its so close.

they have bjj gi and no gi, mma, judo, m.thai, kettlebells, yoga. the people are friendly and if youre a teen its all

If you're looking for an MMA class, I know a french dude, Jess "the joker" Liaudin (former UFC fighter) with a very good pro record teaches here :

Urban Kings Gym

I don't know where Richmond is, but this gym is near king's cross, so it's fairly central.

It doesn't look cheap though.

King's Cross is far from Richmond.

Almost opposite sides of the city.

Sounds sweet, I'll have to check that out!

What are they like with setting up matches? Was thinking it would be fun to go an amateur MMA match just for the experience after 3 months or so!

what type of matches? bjj they are always competing, they just organised the english open, etc etc...

mma, i have only been to a few mma classes, but i know there are about 4 guys there that have regular fights, i was chatting to one that has a fight coming up but i havent actually gone to support anyone yet. the mma and no-gi classes are run by ryan. do some no gi once in a while in bjj as well tho, esp in simons classes.

the m.t. students also have mt fights too. those classes are run by atilla. he also runs the kettlebell classes.

so yeh, lots of competing, they could get you fights etc

I was thinking of an occasional MMA match, although a BJJ one sure would be fun as well. I'll have to check up on it a bit, but this place seems rather priceworthy so to speak!

well im in no position to speak for them, i can only vouch for them as a member myself

come down man

From Richmond station you can get direct trains to either Ravenscourt park (i think Carlsons is actually closer to the stop before Hammersmith these days?) or Kensal Rise (Roger Gracie) or Clapham Junction (BJJ School). London Shoot is not direct but is easy enough if you change to the Picadilly line a couple of stops on the Tube from Richmond iirc.

If you want primarily nogi/mma, then go for LS, otherwise just go and try a class at all of them, all the teachers are good guys, so whichever you choose you should enjoy it.

Cheers for all the help guys, if this was posted in any other forum I'd probably get nothing but sarcastic responses..
