In this thread, just write down what techniques you went over in class, how they work for you.

Also you can write about any ideas or problems you had.

Ultimately I want this to turn into a really interactive discussion to where we can really come together and talk about these things and maybe help out problems we are having in class.

---You can include your time in training and your belt level, stripes also.

Hope you enjoy.

I'll start. Last night I went to class and there was only me and two other guys from our gym. So we had a really informal class. Then this guy walks in who I've never seen before, he just finished grad school and before that served in the usmc as a captain.

He had a blue belt so i was excited to roll with him to see how good he was or how good i was in comparison to each other. We all 4 did progressionals (my instructor included). My instructor tapped him with a baseball choke from a sweeeet set up. Then my first roll with the guy was just a battle on the knees, then he pulled me into his half guard and I tapped him with a cross collar choke.

After our second roll he kept sweeping me from his half guard. I could feel him setting the sweeps up, so I kept sitting back on my heels, but he would switch up the types of sweeps and would get them.

Any advice for avoiding sweeps from half guard while trying to get your knee out to achieve mount, or just chilling and setting up submissions???

Sitting guard against standing opponent collar drag or sweep both legs with butterfly attack. Has always worked well for me, if the collar drag fails, I usually end up in guard bottom with a deep collar grip and often get the cross collar choke from there. If the collar drag is resisted, move to sweep straight back with butterfly leg sweep - that is, you put both legs inside standing guys legs, ala butterfly guard, then force them up and out so opponent goes straight over backwards, use collar grip to come up and step over leg to knee ride. Great series.
