"BJJ instructors putting on Muay Thai shorts and teaching classes" -charletanism in todays MMA scene

Yeah it's common. Last gym I trained at (BTT North Dallas) there "muay thai coach" was basically a BJJ student who had 2 smokers a few years back (lol). They weren't deceiving though which is good (they did not advertise themselves as an MMA gym and did not claim there instructor had any pro experience).

I do know of gyms in DFW where they'll take a simliar instructor and claim that he's a teaching pro and that there gym is MMA

I remember hearing about that gym. My coach took over fight lab, which use to be btt I guess

Funny that you guys mention this. My last standup coach was arguably the most accomplished muay thai fighter in the entire US (saekson janjira).

I remember him pushing fitness classes right around the time I left. He finally figured out that the average person doesn't want to do push kicks for 30 straight minutes while having him yell "you kick like a :eek::eek:get"....... (lol)
lol

By advanced class you mean people who are allowed to spar? If so, thats kind of the min. level people here are allowed to start clinching. The ones who avoid are usually the gym heros who just wanna vent, feel something over others, and realize its out of their comfort zone.

Overall I think its absolutely necessary for competitors, and getting them to build good habits on it should start early. MT clinching is so low in the west, at ammy fights you could have terrible kickboxing and really dominate (and even TKO your opponent) just being that much more ahead in the clinch game.

For sweeping, my current one is less meathead-ish, and rarely do we go for the full dump. My previous gym, ppl were encouraged to do it as often as possible, the issue with that is people who dont have the technique down end up nearly blowing people's knees out smashing it head on. I still think there should be one dump for every 3 motions of it. Not dumping at all is going to have bad habits in grained too. Simple aspect of just following through with the weight of the leg held affects it if someone isn't used to that, and thats not something good to learn on fight night.
anyone who wants to spar should be comfortable clinching too. I guess what I’m trying to get at is not making your fitness folks or even your average evening night pad smasher work the clinch. Fitness classes pay the bills and Most those people don’t want to be running up against some sweaty dude with cauli ear and the worlds tiniest shiny shorts. (Personally I love it)

Gyms who have dedicated clinch classes always go on to do well in amateur competition. It’s also a great way to focus on trips/sweeps/dumps to make sure people know how to send it without hesitation and know how to break their fall.

Yeah when BTT was BTT Plano it was the BTT BJJ coach (who is extremely high level) and the fightlab muay thai coach (who wasn't high level but definately respectable). 2 good coaches in one building, no issues then

They had a falling out so the BJJ coach moved to Dallas and got that kid who only had a few smokers to do muay thai. The Muay thai coach renamed the school as fight lab and advertised that he had MMA but he didn't (he got the blue belt office lady to teach bjj along with some 17 year old who was a highschool wrestler).

It was funny how after they split they tried to pass off that they where multi discipline but the extra discipline they offered was extrememly watered down

I read that as BTT Paino for some reason, and wondered what pianos had to do with high level BJJ and moo tai....

I moved to Dallas to train with James, and
One of those old students is trying to say to all the old guys " let's train our old style" like dude? Your coach is gone and you got blessed with better. I get they probably had a bond with their old coach, but don't try to take the old and new students to train and want to train that shit you were taught. It's stupid

Yeah that was funny. He was really teaching a more traditional kickboxing style but was trying to sneak in a few muay thai moves to claim "this is muay thai not kickboxing".

The best was his instructor who taught him he had his name tattooed across his back. I looked the guy up and he works at a cadillac dealership (lol at having a car salesman tattooed on your back in huge letters lol)

I saw that Obi and Cameron stayed, they where really the only 2 students left (literally 95% of the gym left during the split and went to the BTT gym).

Your probably referring to James who I know is at neither of the 2 gyms

I hope they got rid of that office lady named Leah (China), she was a borderline cult leader

That lady is long gone and did some sneaky shit right away. A few stayed and obi and cam are the main ones and re learned the whole game and are completely different guys.

The guy I mentioned was another kid named James I think. Guess he took the split to heart. James closed the old place and now opened his own and place is like 10,000 square feet and has everything

I learned how to break my falls through a judo gif on breakfalls

Its funny because the peeps then were mocking judo for breakfalls. One day after getting winded being put on my back from rough sweeps I did it out of instinct to prevent my hand from getting smashed on the wood blocks at the corner, it mitigated everything and I've done it ever since. Went to google to see about this breakfall stuff immediately after that day. I still get shit about it sometimes at the current gym because I fall like a graceful dove :) while everyone is plopping and making earthquakes

I regularly get picked up, slammed, thrown, dumped, etc and the trick is just to go limp lol

The worst are the spazzes.

I occasionally like to high-crotch, and one new guy kept spazzing like he was having a seizure while punching me as I was letting him down slowly in MMA sparring (taking advantage of me generosity), after it happened 3 times I just said fuck it, and dropped him from chest height. lol

I guess breakfalling or going limp might've helped him

That is the worst. I would have tried my best to dump him on his neck lol

I noticed actual Muay Thai is not gonna be “fun” for most people. It’s rough on the body and people don’t like clinching.
From a marketing standpoint it’s so much easier to call it mt and teach cardio kickboxing instead lol.

This goes on in some boxing clubs too. The office workers getting their workout more or less pay for the (younger and often pretty broke) guys who really box though, so it's not necessarily a bad thing.

99% of the gyms out there with fight teams are financed by the kids programs and the cardio program. Nothing wrong with that at all
