Have you ever pulled guard in a street fight? Have you ever done a submission? Nobody is going to be kicking your head on the ground just one on one.

i can't think of a scenario where you would need to pull guard in a street fight. guillotine yes, guard no.

There is a thread about 8 threads below this with some good stories similar to your question.

Pulled guard in a street fight? My God, if anybody was that stupid they should have all their belts stripped and be demoted to non-BJJ practitioner.

Why pull guard when it's pretty easy to take down a non-grappler?

My brother has jumped guard in self defense situations on two separate occasions. The most memorable was him pulling a guy down into closed guard and elbowing him into bloody submission. Hey, it might not be the smartest thing, but it sure is great to watch.

I had a guy mounted and was reigning down blows when one of his buddies started punching me in the back of the head and someone else kicked me in the face; I grabbed the dude I was on and rolled him on top of me in my guard to protect me from getting hit

I would pull guard anytime I felt comfortable doing so, do you guys really think you wouldn't be able to keep someone in a strike free range on the ground even from your guard?
If you know what your doing your opponent needs more grappling skill than you to strike from a neutral position.

Your nuts are kinda open for strikes anytime you're in guard...on the streets (or anywhere for this matter) you don't want nut damage...although I do agree that pulling guard is nowhere near as detrimental as some think, mainly because most people are probably just going to give you rib shots and posture up for the beat down. If you know what you're doing you can utilize this to your advantage....but personally I don't want to be on my back on the streets..(cause i'm not a prostitute.:icon_chee)

you should only pull guard in the street if you are getting your ass beat

I haven't, but to quote this story yet again, this guy sort of did (someone tried to attack him in his car, so he apparently locked them into a triangle).

Also, there was a post on the topic a few years ago on Bullshido, where somebody claimed pulling guard was a good option for multiple opponents:

The one technique I have found that I can attest works in a multiple attacker scenario when you can't run away: pulling guard. That's right. The time I best managed to avoid taking a beating was to bring one to the ground and use him as a shield until they heard someone yell and booked. Yet, the first thing that SD guys scoff at is the idea of going to the ground in a multiple attacker scenario.

Heard a story of a white belt going and getting in scraps just to show off his new skills in a nightclub. Supposedly he got beat down pretty bad.

Sounds like a hella good way to get stomped out by the multiple opponents.

I've guillotined a few people but never pulled guard. I have taken someone's back and put my hooks in for a rear naked choke but that was strictly one on one.

Quite a few years ago now in my late teens I was having an argument with some woman. As I tried to get out of my car (she'd already flung the door open) her boyfriend appeared out of now where and pinned me by my throat across the front seats. He was basically in my guard and if I'd known what I did now I could have triangled him easy. But I didn't know the first thing about BJJ back then so I had to eat humble pie or suffer a ground and pound.

My crime was hooting the woman who went through a red light and almost sideswiped me. She was obviously incensed at my cheek :icon_neut and came to give me a piece of her mind. It's often the women who start it.

My take downs and top game far exceed my guard game in terms of efficacy so I'd be hard pressed to justify pulling guard. That said, 1 on 1, whatever gets it away from a boxing match and into a grappling match is a good idea in my book.

I have never pulled guard but have been in the situation in a street fight were we went to the ground and the other guy being bigger fell on top of me. I then wrapped my legs and actually put on arm behind his neck and the other in front and grabbed by biceps and choked him out.

You pull guard if you have to. Where I live, the streets are icy during most of the winter, and chances are that I could easily slip and end up on bottom if someone tried to tackle me. Also, takedown defense doesn't mean much if you're caught by surprise or simply knocked down with a punch.

It all depends on the scenario, though. If you're a competent guard player, and the circumstances allow you to fight as you train, I say go for it. My takedowns are not very strong, but my sweeps are, so in a situation where I know that going to the ground isn't too risky, I might very well go to my guard. Assuming that the guy hasn't trained in grappling, as is the case with 99.9 % of the population here (soccer and skiing nation FTW), he's getting flipped or triangled within a few seconds anyway.

Also, in the unlikely event that my adversary were a skilled judoka or wrestler, and I somehow knew in advance, I'd be butt-flopping like a paraplegic frog. Getting thrown onto asphalt is not my idea of a good time.

if you can't take a guy down just pull guard and sweep right away. Sweeping ppl who don't know bjj or grappling is extremely easy as they have no concept of base. Once you mount him the fight is yours.

I would never purposely pull guard on the street. If the guy decides to pick you up and slam you on concrete, it could result in a broken back.

there are many ways to end up in guard and pulling guard is just one of them. Unfortunately street fights are often unfair and very rarely "lets take it outside".

The chances of being tackled, surprised, tripping, slipping or otherwise ending up on the ground are probably pretty good, especially if you are out drinking...as is often the case...

would I pull guard in the street? probably not, but I will be rady in case by chance I am on my back.
