So I'm trying to decide between Alexandre Garcia (Alexandre Garcia Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) or Gary Grate (bjjreno.com). Word on the street is that there is bad blood between the 2 schools. I heard something about Alex being kicked out of Gary's school a long time ago. My question is for anyone affiliated with either school - what's the story? I'm thinking of going to Alexandre's school but want to know if he is a good guy to train with?

Alexandre Garcia's guys do well at tournaments. I met him at the UGF and he seemed like a nice guy.

Gary. More knowledge, more experience and way higher level training partners.

lol, "word on the street"

Gary is the shit. He's got great technique, great students, and a solid style. Don't know much about Alex, but from what I've heard he's a turncoat, shitty dude who decided to just open a school and can't lock down an affiliate. I'd go Gary's. More classes at better times, and a team atmosphere.

I have never met either but also heard from acquaintances that Gary's gym can be a little full of juiced up bro's looking to fight and do not necessarily take kindly to newbies. Again, word-of-mouth so I only take it with a grain of salt. That's why I posted here to try and see if anyone from either gym actually has first-hand input. I appreciate all of the responses. Thank you

Every gym has bro's. I can say that BJJ weeds out 3/4 of the douche bags that come through the front door. The guys at Gary's arent all the same, and some can be toolish, but no one take liberties with new guys, or tries to scare anyone out. There are some fighters, and all of them are gentlemen and carry themselves as ambassadors. I assume the guys at Alex's gym are the same way. I'd recommend Gary's but I can assure you that you'll get good training at either school.

Much appreciated for your honest insight. Thank you very much.

I never got that vibe, but I came in at a high level so maybe if I were a white belt it would have been different.

The vibe was just about the same as any other academy I've visited; some friendly, some indifferent, some aloof, some pretending it's the black belt absolute in the mundials. Everyone was friendly and Gary was more than friendly.

The important thing you want to look for is a variety of training partners. Yeah, you can go to a small school and can learn under a great BB, but he will not move the same as a new white belt, blue belt, etc. You need guys at your level, better than you and way better than you to really get the most out of your training.

Exactly. Charles Gracie under Gary has a huge selection on students at all levels. If you're interested in getting into MMA I'd strongly recommend starting under Gary, they also have great Muay Thai under the coach Casey and phenomenal Judo under Mical.
