Hey all, sorry if this is off topic. I was wondering if anyone has or is taking any BJJ classes anywhere in chicago. I've googled it and I see a gracie camp and a few others that look legit but I was hoping for some first hand responses, thanks.

There are actually quite a number of places to train in and around Chicago.

As you likely know, Chicago is huge and takes some time to get around. Is there any particular area you're looking into? Downtown? North/South side? etc.

It's a pretty certain thing that everyone's going to reply that "I train at 'X' and it's the greatest." So the best thing is to try ALL the places out yourself.

I know that it sucks to say that, but thats really the only way to get a real gauge.

I'm moving there in 6 weeks and I don't know the area at all. I'll be in the north side in the Lincoln Park area. I'm also curious as to how much I should expect to pay for a standard fundamental 2/3x a week class.

Carlson Jr's gym is right in Old Town near there with a bunch of good helpful guys. I'm not sure there is any place more convenient. Valko is somewhere not too far away, but I've never been there.

I'm biased but my favorite place in Chicago are Valko BJJ (obviously) and New Breed. I think you'll find these two to be the most welcoming and affordable. You can find the Valko schedule and prices on our site, Valko Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy | Chicago, IL Brazilian .

I went to train at New Breed's new location last week and it was great. Mark is great at jits and ego free. It's a bit far from Lincoln Park though.

Carlson's has a lot of tough guys but I haven't been there in years. One of their black belts, Mark Daley is running a legit program at LA Boxing in Wrigley/Boys Town, which may be close to you.

As New Breed suggested, try out a free class at all of them. Heck, write a blog about it.
