I have been training bjj for 6 months. While reading various books about bjj technique, history and etc., I have come across numerous references to bjj basics or fundamentals without, at the same time, explaining what they consider this to mean. In your mind, what are bjj basics and/or fundamentals? Any help here is appreciated.

Go check out "Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Theory and Technique" by Royler and Renzo Gracie. That book encompasses all the basic moves of which there are far too many to list here.

haha "Position before Submission" Great simple rule to remember for training.

IMHO the "BJJ basics are"

1)the ecomical use of enegery
2) position before submission
3)maximum leverage for movements (ie sweeps, submissions)

I just put this up on my site actually. Check out the first four links under "Basics".

I think I'm going to dedicate one training session per week at my club to the basics, and we'll try to cover one link each week. Then just loop it all over again next month.

Keep in mind there is no official list of BJJ basics, and not everyone will completely agree with me on this list. However, I do think that most blue belts have a good command of that list regardless of their particular instructor, so most of it would qualify as universal basics.

Basics also refers to the basic sweeps and subs that you learn when you are beginning, those moves will be the basis for all that comes after

hip movements and getting angles i consider to be essential to the basics.

positions, the most basic sweeps and guard passes, arm bar, triangle, RNC, guillotine

there was some quote i read yesterday where Rickson said he won 90% of his fights by either RNC or arm bar

Having a good base is everything. And is one of the biggest shortcomings of newbies,

Thank you for this - most appreciated. I will try to work on these suggestions. Any advice or exercises or drills to increase hip movement?
