How practical is BJJ as self-defense? You're either going to break someone's limb or put them to sleep? Is this practical?

very practical, if you box, you beat the snot out of them + you have 0 ground game, grappling good on the ground and when you choke someone it gives them time to think of how they messed with the wrong guy. put them to sleep and walk away.

What people generally say is this, BJJ is very good for 1on1 self defense, but with more than 1 or 2 attackers its not gonna do that much good. Thats what I usually hear anyway

you basically just answered your own question...choking someone out/breaking a limb should stop basically anyone out in a streetfight so why wouldnt it be efficient for self defense? there is no good style to take on multiple people at once but if thats your goal then i would suggest krav maga or something..

It also helps you learn to get an advantegous position on the ground, from which you can attack, or just run away.

When training for self defense, its good to understand ground fighting(ala BJJ) but BJJ shouldnt be a substitute for self defense training.

Groundfighting is only a fraction of SD, it should not be overlooked but it should not be the only thing to focus on.

You might wanna look up joining a track team for an effective martial art.. and then BJJ if you have no where to run.

It's great if you've got a weak chin. I've been KO'd before just sparring so if I ever got into a bar fight or something I'd shoot for a takedown right away. It's common sense but you never want to be knocked/choked unconscious in a street fight.

probobly the worst thing to do in a barfight is to shoot in for a takedown right away

what happens if your unsuccesfull with the shot? and being on the floor in a barfight is ridiculous, youll probobly get your head split open with a bottle or something man. Just grab whatever is available, hit him and get out of there..I dont know off too many "fair" bar fights and besides his drunken buddies would probobly be right there you know

Good points.. I've obviously never been in a bar fight so I don't know. Lol.

yea..I seen the bas lethal streetfighting which he talks about doing shit like grabbing bottles and hitting the guy or putting hotsauce on your fingertips and eyepoking the guy..doing that would probobly be a bit better then shooting in-position-submission LOL

Bas is one guy I would not fuck with in a bar. Although he seems like the type of dood that'd rather by you a drink than stomp on ya.

bas is a well rounded martial artist. he does sport MMA. but that dude knows street self defense. hes very in depth with street self defense martial arts. he trains in krav maga alot. he trained come CIA or agents of the sort. he talks about it somewhere where i read.

It is important to note, that even the experts in BJJ (for example, Royce Gracie) don't advocate shooting for a takedown in SD. I used to write for a SD magazine and here is a review I did for Brazilian Jui- Jitsu Self Defense Techniques by Royce and Charles Gracie.

Review: Brazilian Jui- Jitsu Self Defense Techniques by Royce and Charles Gracie

The controversy over the validity of grappling methods, and Brazilian Jui- Jitsu (BJJ) in particular, has risen again. This very magazine has published a number of articles on this topic, including one of my own. The Martialist

in a bar fight my opponent is getting a bottle to his head, a cue stick to the face, or a flying bar stool.

As far as one on one SD, I highly recommend it after seeing white belts with 3-4 months of training completly destroy several people with it.

But you also have to consider the fact of multiple attackers and the such.
Best bet would be to take a year of BJJ and also a year of muay Thai, then pratice NHB with your friends once in awhile (wearing saftey gear of course.)

My game plan for the street is to keep the distance by throwing kicks, then if they happen to get close enough to swing on me go for a clinch and start throwing the elbows and close range kicks to the legs.
I'm a pretty big guy so controlling the neck gives me lots of options for a take down leading to dominate posistion, and as soon as I hit the ground I go ape shit with the elbows trying to get back to my feet and end the fight quickly.
