How good do we think BJ Penn will be at 145lbs?

I got quite excited when I learned about this. Although he has been competitive at 170lbs and did suprisingly well at 190lbs with Machida we all know this was not his most efficient weight class.

There has always been jokes about BJ being unmotivated, not prepared etc. Sounds like he will have a proper camp for this one and he will have no choice but to improve his diet and cardio to get to 145lbs.

So will he gas in the first round from the weight cut and get out pointed by Edgar for the 3rd time or could he actually make a run at Aldo? I would like to believe this could be good for him just because he is a legend. Still only 34 so not past it yet.

Also, any interesting match ups at 145 for him aside for Aldo and Edgar?

In order to make weight he'll have to work like crazy so his cardio should be good.

We'll never know unless he decides to fight someone other than Frankie at FW.

Frankie will make him look bad, he just has BJ's number.

I hope BJ can drop his obsession with Frankie and make another run at LW.

I imagine he'll have to be in peak condition to make 145. Should be interesting...

If there is one word I could use to describe the type of fighter BJ is it would be that he's a wildcard.

It's a complete gamble to how BJ will come to fight. He wins/does really well when he's not supposed to (Hughes I, III, Fitch) but then loses when people think he's gonna win (Edgar). That's what I love about him though, cause when he's on, he's fucking on and is a destroyer. He's just so exciting/scrappy and that's why I think he (back in the day) had such a rabid fan base/was super polarizing, cause you never know what you're gonna get with him.

BJ pretty much got me into the sport, so no matter through his ups and downs I'll always be a diehard fan of his.

On paper it doesn't look good. Edgar's the guy who gave BJ problems because of his speed and pace, also BJ tends to gas and thats more likely in fast paced fights. He enjoys a speed advantage over most guys at WW, can punch as hard as them and has a better chin than most. At 145 i think he'l need to use his grappling/TDs a lot more to win. It seems unlikely he can win by counter striking.

That's what I respect so much about BJ though. He's not looking for easy match ups. Also at this point he's not even doing this to make a run for a title. If you see his recent interviews too, he says he harbors no ill will towards Frankie at all, but it's just the fighter in him that wants to compete and prove himself. He's doing this fight for himself, and not a lot of other fighters would do that/say the same thing.

I know, that's what I'm worried about. I like BJ and want to see him fight more, but I feel like after this Frankie fight, he's gonna 'retire' again. I see Frankie beating him even worse than the second fight and that can't be good for BJ, who like you said, is trying to prove to himself. I just feel he has a lot of winnable matchups at LW and I'd rather see him stick around for awhile up there, that's all.

The no ill will towards Frankie also makes me respect BJ a lot. Uncle Dana tried to say that BJ said something along the lines of "That guy cant beat me, that guy never beat me", when in reality he said "I feel that no one has really beaten Frankie at LW yet."

I think we potentially get to see a really good BJ, the best BJ in the octagon for years and years.

Seriously, if he makes 145, he will probably have to go on a strict diet and have a solid camp which leads me to believe that he might not gas in the 2nd/3rd and could beat most, if not all, top 10 guys. BJ after losing a couple of times is very underrated and most of his defeats (besides Edgar) have come when he's either fat or outmuscled (like GSP #2 - he got dominated badly by a guy that has the power of a MW).

I think Penn will fight anybody. Dude's a warrior, I'll give him that. And I'm not even a fan. He'd fight Cain if Dana asked him to.

Penn said he'd never fight Aldo because of Andre Pederneiras.
