Billy Robinson Teaching Toeholds

I feel like if your oponent isn't wearing shoes it can be hard to hit a lot of Catch based leg-locks like the shin locks and this Gotch Toehold

while this may be partially true, i sometimes find toeholds to be easy to lock up and really difficult to escape. i know the top guys like mendes and cobrinha seem pretty immune to them, even when they're locked up completely but for us, mere mortals, they're the shit.

the mechanics of the hold are just so simple and yet you can put a lot of power into it. it's the only leglock i go for frequently.

Great stuff, I'll have to try it out.

But as always, I can't stand the guy in the glasses who is in all these videos.

I like the first toe hold they were going over, gonna have to try that. And i think toeholds are actually pretty good for locking up without shoes, obviously if the guy is wearing shoes its better, but you can make due either way.

I'd like to know more about this particular variation:

It looks super nasty, but I've never seen it anywhere other than in this video. Has anyone here ever used it?

just watching these toe hold videos makes me cringe.

I kinda miss leg locks but I guess in Gi they are frowned upon till you get to a certain level??

Only the ones that are dependent on belt level. One of several reasons why I'm trying to get good at the standard cross footlock.

Brian's a good guy. Maybe he just over-reacts a bit?

Haha I didn't notice Brian's glasses at first and thought he was talking about Billy. I thought to myself "How can you hate Billy Robinson" and then "How does he not know his name. It's in the thread title?"

Yeah that's pretty much it. Kind of how he acts over-the-top in awe/pain of everything. We get it, Billy Robinson/Erik Paulson is the man, you don't need to oversell it.

I did this inadvertently in a tournament once. Was going for the straight ankle lock, lost the grip a little but kept the foot, and sort of improvised. We were belly down, not on our sides. Popped his ankle but he didn't tap. Not very technical on my part, it was more like "grab his foot and wrench it as hard as you can out of desperation because you're losing on points."

I did the same thing and I had to go back and re watch it.

He was Sakuraba's coach, as well as Tamura's and those that came out of the UWFi Snake Pit. He's also spent time coaching Josh Barnett and Megumi Fujii.

He currently coaches part time at Hillary's gym in Arkansas.

Tall guy looks like a bald Sheldon Cooper.
