"Yusaka Maezawa, a Japanese billionaire who has paid SpaceX an undiclosed sum of money for a trip around the Moon in 2023, says he now wants “single women” to apply to fly on the mission with him in a bizarre matchmaking venture.

Maezawa, who sold his online fashion company Zozo in 2019 for $3.7 billion, posted the request for applicants on his Twitter page today, Sunday, January 12. "Why not be the ‘first woman’ to travel to the moon?" he wrote.

On an accompanying website, a collaboration with Japanese web streaming service AbemaTV for a program called "Full Moon Lovers", Maezawa laid out some of the requirements he was looking for.


“Yusaku Maezawa looks for a female partner to go to the moon with him,” the website begins. “Through serious one-on-one planned matchmaking, Maezawa looks to find his life partner.”"

The website states that applicants must be “single women aged 20 or over”. They must have a “bright personality” and be “always positive,” while also being interested in “going into space.” The website does not ask for any professional qualifications for a mission to space, scientific or otherwise.

Applicants have until January 17 to apply, with the “selection” beginning in late January. Some of the applicants will then go on dates with Maezawa in February and March, before a “final decision on partner” is made at the end of March."
