bill maher is a national treasure

These liberal pundits are all smug bastards who all repeat the same shit night after night.

Typical smug John Stewart clone: "Did you see that stupid thing that was said on Fox News (video clip shown) Come on, it's the current year! How stupid can conservatives be? Ugh."

Liberal Audience: (Standing Ovation) "Wooh! Sick Burn! Way to stick it to those Conservatards!"
How dare He point out stupidity

The debate format is loosely scripted like a new Miles Davis song, but it rarely stays inbounds.
He has prepared monologues and skits, like the one in the OP, too.

It used to be more about the guest when he was on ABC. I think people forget how serious that show regularly got. On HBO, he makes sure to try to keep it more loose and moving. I really liked the old show because you got to hear a really diverse group of people talk about politics. Now, you get Cornell West it feels like almost once a month. I like him and maybe Maher got tired of talking about politics with uninformed celebrities. I don't know. On the old show, it occasionally got interesting when someone like Marylin Manson would come on and nail it being smart and articulate or you got to see how clueless someone like Dave Matthews was. I was a big Dave Mathews fan back in the late 90s and it kind of crushed me a little when I realized that one of my favorite musicians was a complete moron.

The debate he had with Jeremy Scahill on his last show was really good stuff. You won't find that on any news show out there.

I don't agree with him on everything, but he usually has good guests on and it's entertaining.

I wish that could have gone on longer.

my favorite political show, by far. they actually debate, one, and they give the Right guests time to get their pts out. Plus its actually entertaining

I think he's filled the gap Stewart had with me. He's far more direct than Stewart but when he gets cornered on an idea, he tends to just be speechless or say fuck it and move on while stewart would find a way to make joke and ignore the point. I'd probably say I would enjoy a conversation with maher more. I also like the format of his show and think there should be more like it

I always found Jon Stewart to be pretty funny. Does not matter if he's talking bad about Republicans Or democrats.

Bill Maher, on the other hand, seem mean when he did his commentary. Like he was a bitter old man who blame the conservatives for everything.

I think Bill's show is less comedy but intentional. Stewarts stuff was always more light but he still wanted to push things when he could.

I do really like Maher at times but he is the quintessential smug liberal and I think people like him and Stewart and Colbert have poisoned political discourse in this country by making disdain and condescension to the other side not just acceptable but almost the norm for the left.

At least Maher brings some legit conservative voices one, some of which hold their own against him and the panel. I think its a good balance, he won't let that stop him from being a cheeky cunt but it does force himself to answer to the other side in real time(pun intended).

Totally disagree with Maher on this. 100%.

I read posts here about how he allows his guest to debate, damn near every time the conservative says something the crowd boos, or they get interrupted by everyone else and then they make sarcastic comments instead of actually debating. I wonder if people actually know what a debate is or if they even understand proper conduct to a debate.

Agreed on how he reacts to a well thought out counter argument. His guest on that show was crushing him from all sides, and he had nothing. Eventually he just told him to be quiet. LOL.

Stewart clone? Pretty sure Maher's been doing this a lot longer than Stewart.

I enjoy Maher, however imo he isn't right about this. At least not entirely.

Hes been cheerleading for Killary too much in the Primary (even donating to her campaign i think).
Considering what a terrible candidate she is (and Repubs haven't even really started the attack ads yet), that made me furious.

Actually, he was a Bernie supporter. Now that Bernie is essentially out, he's backing Hillary. What's ironic is that he was bashing the conservatives for doing the exact same thing with Trump.

In fact, along that line, I recently saw an anti-Trump comment by the humorist Andy Borowitz on Facebook that was somewhat similar that initially had me nodding my head:
Andy Borowitz said:
Stopping Trump is a short-term solution. The long-term solution, and it will be more difficult, is fixing the educational system that has created so many people ignorant enough to vote for Trump.
But then I read the top comment responding to that at the time which I can't find anymore. Probably because people were butthurt someone had a strong counterpoint and sabotaged it by voting it down as spam or some shit. The commenter said something to this effect:

"I disagree. I'm an independent who doesn't support Trump, but the reason I think he's resonating with angry voters is because people are hurting, and neither party seems willing or able to do anything about their suffering. The Republicans seem beholden to the corporations and the super-rich folks who own them while the Democrats just love their fixed income crowd."

Not sure I've seen any more succinct or accurate political analysis this entire election cycle.

He's not right at all. Trump's popularity is a entirely a product of people being fed right the fuck up with the Libs and their bullshit.
