Biggest pile of crap I have seen!!! ("Documentary" inside)

Yeah thats crap ... totally .. I'll admit some TMA's arent as effective as others but its all in how you apply what you know and in 2 on 1 situations or worse you are either lucky or extremely skilled ...

hahahhahaa, is it wrong that I laughed when the black guy got beat up? It's usually the other way around 2 black people robbing a white guy but yeah the video was pretty stupid in general

I thought it was an accurate portrayal of traditional martial arts.

anybody wanna summarise that video?

It basically shows a bunch of tournament and training scenes in TMAs then a totally unrelated scene where a guy gets 'beat up' and mugged by two guys. And it really is an unrelated scene. It isn't like the guy tries a high kick and it fails to work. He just curls up in a ball on the ground and somehow this proves that TMAs suck. ;)

News flash. We all know that curling up in a ball doesn't really work.

It did mention that awareness was the most important things (which is true). But other than that...

Awareness + High Kicks beats Awareness alone...

That's a segment from Geoff Thompson's pavement arena series. That's just a small bit from it though. The "Pavement Arena" is how he incorporates techniques from TMA's into a more functional self defense application. There's a lot of crap out there when it comes to RBSD but IMO, Geoff's stuff is really good so don't totally write him off based on this clip alone.

Biggest load of pointless rubbish ever.

You should also try reading the first few pages of his autobiography, I think he still has that on his website. He's an amazing guy.

This isn't about professional fighters, it is about people who have black belts but have only done point sparring/light contact and one-step sparring who think they can defend themselves. It is about confidence these people get although they have never had a realistic sparring class..

You guys make it sound like self defense is rocket science. We have a kid at our school who got 'jumped' for money by three guys late at night. He low kicked the lead guy, hit him with a flurry in the face, and then ran like hell. The guy is small for his age as well.

Personally I think the biggest problem for anyone is that they wait too long before admitting to themselves that have to DO something. I see myself having that problem. I was always a good tournament fighter and good in most sports. But a street situation has no 'Ready, set, go' mark. I'd probably eat some punches, get mounted, and pounded because I'd fail to recognize that things were about to get ugly. But that is a personal thing...my nice guy gene. It has nothing to do with faulty TMA training.

I can see the point the video was trying to get at. "Point-stop fighting" and only light contact sparring will develop bad habits in a person for self-defense. However, saying that someone's TMA training causes people to overthink their situation is wrong. My karate instructor from way back was a correctional officer in a maximum security prison. His karate saved hiss ass from getting shanked a couple of times and it wasn't like the inmates who did it were coming up to him and saying "you ready to get shanked?"

Just like anything else, TMAs work well when taught well and practiced with dedication.

First of all, semmy shilt did not train traditionally. He trains to hurt and not get hurt. Second, there is a chance a pro kickboxer can get mugged anyway (hint: ground fighting). All martial arts, even MMA, may give u the same % of winning in a street fight than a caged fight.

LOL at "News flash. We all know that curling up in a ball doesn't really work." So true.

Yesterday I saw a clip of a TMA working in the street. My friend bought a DVD called Street Anarchy, Knuckle Up. Most of the fights were pretty lousy, but one was just hilarious. This black guy is talking shit to a white guy of similar size when the white guys busts out with some crazy kung fu stance. Shittalker is like WTF and keeps backing away. I figured it was going to be one of those TMA don't work on the street clips, but I was wrong. Shittalker finally decides to engage with his hands down and catches a punch to the jaw that knocks him out cold. It was pretty hilarious.

I don't think you have to worry about Semmy getting mugged (ground fighting or no). No two bit mugger is going to see that giant walking down the street and think, "Now there is an easy mark..."

;)

But I know what you are saying. Heck even Genki Sudo got stabbed. If it can happen to an athletic guy like that it can happen to anyone.
