Hi all,

Just wanted to see what some people's opinions were on this. What are your thoughts around which fighter suffered the loss that had the biggest impact on their career?

The ones that spring to my mind are Anderson Silva losing to Chris Weidman, and Anthony Pettis losing to RDA.

I think with Silva, while a lot of people dismiss the "aura of invincibility" as bullshit, I believe that the clowning that he employed in the cage wasn't necessarily an indication that he was so much better than the competition, but a genuine tactic he employed to frustrate his opponents into making mistakes and rushing in, allowing him, as a excellent counterstriker, to really capitalise. I felt like the Weidman loss really highlighted that and I think if you watch his following fights he seems to have really lost that confidence in his own abilities which made him so special.

With RDA - Pettis I think what Dos Anjos showed is the perfect execution of a gameplan based on a careful study of another fighter. And once that was exposed, I believe this opened the door for other fighters to copy the same tactics of pressuring, leaving no space, grinding him out against the cage etc.
Also I think if you look at Pettis' performance since, just like Silva you can see that confidence and flashiness is really missing and that has turned him into a less versatile fighter.

So what do you think are some of the critical losses that really altered the trajectory of a fighter's career and why?

Frank Mir's bike accident should count as a loss, no? @KONE ?

although his story is still being written, conor's loss to nate might turn out to be the biggest of them all.

or not.

until ronda actually steps foot in the octagon, i'd have to say her. from the top of wmma to potential retirement after the first loss is hard to beat. obviously she could come back and such but with all the times her return has been delayed, maybe it never happens

Sylvias loss to Mercer.

Gina did the same thing too.

Came here to post this.

Dan Hardy went on a big losing streak after getting beat by GSP. Ditto Koscheck.

Penn was never the same after the first Edgar loss.

This is the 3rd time Rockhold has been full blown KO'd, I think his chin is gonna be shit after this one.

Ronda. She went from being stupidly overhyped to unofficially retired.

Mentally I think Conor and Ronda are the two biggest...at least Anderson and Pettis both shrugged off the losses and moved on.

Henderson making Fedor faceplant into prison position. After that he would quit fighting any top fighter and only safely stick to cans outside of Zuffa or even the US. He's now reduced to feasting on leftovers who were cans even when they were in the UFC. From goat to ultimate slope. Tears of unfathomable sadness from his fanboys.

I was going to go with Anderson to Weidman.
I've felt that Pettis wasn't the same after losing to RDA.
It's hard to think of many new ones at the moment, but I'll go with Penn to Edgar 1. With a win, BJ potentially never gos back to playing around at 170 again, and instead wraps things up at 155.. but on the other hand, this is BJ, so who knows

Also, Forrest vs Anderson could get a mention.
