Hi all,
Just wanted to see what some people's opinions were on this. What are your thoughts around which fighter suffered the loss that had the biggest impact on their career?
The ones that spring to my mind are Anderson Silva losing to Chris Weidman, and Anthony Pettis losing to RDA.
I think with Silva, while a lot of people dismiss the "aura of invincibility" as bullshit, I believe that the clowning that he employed in the cage wasn't necessarily an indication that he was so much better than the competition, but a genuine tactic he employed to frustrate his opponents into making mistakes and rushing in, allowing him, as a excellent counterstriker, to really capitalise. I felt like the Weidman loss really highlighted that and I think if you watch his following fights he seems to have really lost that confidence in his own abilities which made him so special.
With RDA - Pettis I think what Dos Anjos showed is the perfect execution of a gameplan based on a careful study of another fighter. And once that was exposed, I believe this opened the door for other fighters to copy the same tactics of pressuring, leaving no space, grinding him out against the cage etc.
Also I think if you look at Pettis' performance since, just like Silva you can see that confidence and flashiness is really missing and that has turned him into a less versatile fighter.
So what do you think are some of the critical losses that really altered the trajectory of a fighter's career and why?
