John McCarthy shared his disappointment in the advice given from the corner of Diego Sanchez at Saturday’s event.

“[Josh Fabia should have said], ‘You could have lost that round’,” McCarthy said on the Weighing In Show with Josh Thomson. “Because you’ve got to have your guy go out there thinking, ‘Hey, man, I have to win this,’ and / or, ‘I’m doing good . . . let me just continue with what I am doing.’

But you have also got to give him… Look, I understand what he is saying and you know Trevor Wittman said some things about it, when he says, 'Take a "V."' I understand what he is saying. I’ve heard that in training. It is all about the lateral step and what you are going to do, but he’s not giving him good advice. Because Diego was not in that fight in the first two rounds. He was getting killed!

John McCarthy continued where he questioned whether or not Diego Sanchez should continue fighting.

“And you know this whole thing of putting his hand out the way he’s putting it and you’re going ‘man.’ There is just something different about him completely. Now, the way he walked in, I call it the Cocky Rooster, I kind of enjoyed it. But, people have to start looking at you know, how many fights is enough fights?”

Sad, but Diego should have retired several years ago... He is just going for permanent damage for the rest of his life...

Diego wants to die in there, let Diego die in there...

Dude doesn't know anything else, is brain damaged either way, and will inevitably go off the rails like Matt Hughes and BJ Penn when he loses the direction that fighting gives him, so let him do what he wants. I'd rather see him working and happy than retired and crazy.

I'm not big on asking fighters to retire, especially when they're 3-1 in their last 4 fights.

    Let him bang bro.

Who doesn't. Would be a special kind of asshole to want him to get killed before he retires.

10-15 years from now ( he still wont be old), an interview with Diego will be sad.
I hope hes been smart with his finances- on to the next chapter of life with luck and hopefully decent health. The time has come.

as much as i cant stand BJM
he is not wrong about any of this for a change.
diego wanting out and seeing him broken was one of the saddest mma moments i have ever had.

i didnt see a fighter quit.
i seen a fighter who knew he was done and the shock of all the bull shit he was believing set it and now seeing a fighter who does not know how to quit that cant continue.
was very heartbreaking. hopefully diego can find a good path in life after fighting and be happy.

    @Buff getting called out :eek:

It's tough to tell a guy to give up all he knows after so long. I hope he at least picks his fights well if he keeps fighting. Molest the Mickey Galls of the world a few more times.

I think with a new camp Diego could have at least another 4-5 years in the game.

I fear for society the day Diego Sanchez ceases to become a fighter and has to live a normal life. It won't end well.

It's not just "telling a guy to give up"... It's a guy that's been fighting since he was 16 and for almost 20 years at a high, famous level... There is nothing else.

Diego has said many times he wants to be the first fighter to die in the octagon. Great. I love bloodsports, and it would be a hell of a legacy to leave behind. Would watch. Would be sad. Would still watch.

Obviously "die in the octagon" is a massive exaggeration from him and me, but I stand by the sentiment behind it.

I'm an asshole, sure, but I also really don't see who should be the asshole to tell him that it's over either... The guy has alcohol issues, and is crazy, and has serious CTE... He's fucked either way, so let him go out banging bitches in hotel rooms, instead of sitting at home remembering the good old days.

Nobody is forcing him to live his best life in the octagon, he's still winning fights... Fuck it.

I think Dana White is close to doing to Diego Sanchez what he did with BJ Penn : simply refusing to offer them one single more fight.

UFC are bound to have some affection for the guy, given that he goes wayyyy back, and I think Dana is going to be talking to Diego and telling him 'The time is right man'. It wouldnt surprise me if that was the last time we see Diego in the Octagon.

The difference between Diego and BJ is that Diego's recent fight record looks like this:

    Whereas BJ's looks like this:

The problem is, with many fighters by the time they consider the choice, the damaged brain is involved in the decision..
