Big crisis in Japan that may effect the world...

Chinese are pretty much the same way.

I was meeting with a large Chinese E-Com company last month and their employees either work 6 days a week, or rotating Saturdays, and they pretty much do 10-12 hour days as standard. This is a company with 3,000 or so employees.

I work in and out of China. Was there 3 times this year. Yes, they do work a lot of hours, but I’ll be honest they don’t get much done. Everything is by committee. They take a 90-120 min lunch. Nap for at least half of it. I wasn’t impressed, to be honest.

They should be thankful to have jobs.

If we Americans were only so lucky to be able to be worked to death.

It's actually a fun game too... Karoshi 2.0 is my favorite. You have to kill yourself on every level.

they make some pretty good porn, 2nd best porn making country in the world IMO

Yep, they sleep at lunch because they literally work 12+ hour days lol.

The company I'm doing business with has a very 'get shit done' mentality. Not alot of time wasted on decision making. They just treat their workers like shit and pay them shit. I can't believe how people work 12 hours a day, 6-7 days a week, and the office environment sucks. I couldn't do it, but I'm gonna make some good money with these fuckers

I work for a Japanese company, in the Singapore subsidiary. Our main HQ tries very hard to operate a good work-life balance and has been mostly observed.

In general, they still operate a strict TOP down hierarchy, so no work gets done until the boss gives the green light, and then it’s a flurry of activity from 5pm - 10pm.

I heard that there was no sick leave policy in Japan, so people had to save their holiday in order to be able to take sick leave. For those without leave, they would come into office and check into the sick Bay and sleep.

I did hear in recent years there were 3 cases of possible Karoshi. One guy died in the office over the weekend and wasn’t found until Monday. He had a Wife and kid so no idea why he wasn’t reported missing earlier and how security missed that he didn’t sign out.

My Sister in law worked in Google Japan. People worked 8am - 10pm, and we fed 3 excellent meals per day to keep them there. There was also a total ban on internal relationships, so that stopped people dating.

Interesting thing is though Japan actually has quite low productivity for hours worked, much lower than most of western Europe. Part of that might I spose be that it lacks natural resources that bring in GDP more easily but does also suggest that working ultra long hours is more about image/culture than actual productivity.

I think you could argue that humans naturally aren't geared to long laborious work, we evolved as hunters which involves shorter more intense work.

Im interested if japanese blue collar guys work plusc12 hour days.

Good luck wuth that, alcohol abuse is through the roof probably

Yeah, it’s no wonder they enjoy having meetings in the states, 1 hour meeting is heaven here in China it’s 3 hours minimum and often 5 hours just repeating and encourage the same nonsense.
Not to mention outdoor “pep talks” in the morning even in the freezing cold of winter...

I don't think it's bullshit or a stereotype. More like a spectrum with you representing one end and the article the other. I mean, we've all seen the same thing at our own offices, haven't we? One guy busts his hump while the other guy shitposts on Sherdog all day?

I guess the only real question is the ratio of "looking like they're working" to "working like they're dying" employees. I'm gonna go with 80/20, like with most things...

The information from OCDE is collected from thousands of companies and thousands of people.
Numbers don't lie.
Japanese people work on average, less than people in Canada and the USA.
They range on the middle of the scale for working hours globally.
It's not an opinion.
I just gave my personal experience to put context as to why some people may think Japanese work so hard.
It's a well learned prejudice, just like the idea that Latin people are "lazy" when in fact they rank amongst the populations that work the most hours.

meh, japs are historically cited as the 'hardest working' blah blah etc

recent studies have shown Americans work far more hours, far more days without relief

and suffer far more from the syndrome than the diminutive easterners.

I still like sushi though.
As a Canadian who works for an American Company, I can indeed confirm that American's are hard working as well. You do get less vacation time, and Stats, and maternity leave is a joke. Additionally the amount of companies that expect free work to be completed on employees own time is huge. Funny though is that these companies never do stuff for free, but expect their employees to all the time.
