I agree. My parents both peaked intellectually in their 60s. They both have lost a step or two in their 70s.

Agree on this as regards the SCOTUS. Appointments are lifetime to avoid conflicts or pressure to vote a certain way, but that was when they lived to be 65-80 tops. As we have them now go on into their 80s and 90s, I think it's time to consider a mandatory retirement age there. Maybe 78 or something. I know and have known some people still sharp as hell at 85 or even 90, but to be honest those are outliers by the time you get to folks who are even 80 and over.

You are pulling so much wrong from this. Clarence Thomas is an staunch 1950s republican who of course would always receive criticism from the left. He probably felt he was unjustly put through the wringer due to Anita Hill and others making allegation during his supreme court nomination. If those women just had a sense of humor, we would have never had this mess. The republicans never sided with Anita Hill and attacked her constantly so it is of no surprise he feels the left has been his enemy. Democrats would have pushed to nominate another candidate.

MLK's comments are just stating that the vast majority of the people in the U.S. were moderate but lackadaisical in their effort to support civil rights. Most people in the past were moderate as opposed to how it is now with there being a strong segregation between parties. He mentions neither democrats nor republicans and is basically just saying that is bewildering the vast majority ,who are moderate and not overtly racist, can't be bother to do anything to support civil rights.

I'm a moderate, I'm not "on the right" so I obviously would not regurgitate what people on the right say.

I also don't think you guys are all that conservative. I think you have a vision of what conservatives are, and you like to label yourself as such. But when it comes down to it, you're actually just focused on identity and team politics, without actually adhering to the principles that come along being conservative. I think the label you are searching for that best fits you is actually, partisan.

For example, there's nothing conservative about wanting the President to push for government interference with private companies. That is the opposite of conservative, actually. But you are more than willing to do that, since you are partisan. There is also nothing "conservative" about pushing drugs that have not been clinically proven, it's just an ignorant and entirely apolitical stance. But most of the "conservatives" on here will defend it because you're partisans.

I've voted for Larry Hogan twice. He's more traditionally conservative than Trump, but he's not a buffoon. I honestly think you'd prefer Trump because you're more into the cult of personality than conservative politics.

Do people of color need coddling? Does their voting hinge on getting Tammany Hall style handouts?

Think the best thing that could be done would be to expect things out of them and to hold them to the same standard as whites.
