Biden administration expected to emphasize climate science over lunar exploration at NASA

I said in a previous thread the Democrats seem to be focusing on the climate issues we face.

This news is great and using NASA is the best idea ever.

who cares man? i'm not approaching this from a partisan place and think it is ridiculous no matter who does it. i think it is a tragedy of selfishness and stupidity that we place things like this above basic human needs and always have.

Are you a woman?

Good move by President Biden.

Long distance space exploration is a childish endeavor when the world is facing real problems that we need to solve.

It's like they're actively looking for a backup planet so they can say fuck it and leave the rest of us here.

Yeah looking to colonize mars sounds so childishly

that’s an incredibly good thing. literally how could anyone have a problem with that?

Have you ever heard of the exhibit the Koch brothers paid for at the Smithsonian?

"The David H. Koch Hall of Human Origins, at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, is a multimedia exploration of the theory that mankind evolved in response to climate change. At the main entrance, viewers are confronted with a giant graph charting the Earth’s temperature over the past ten million years, which notes that it is far cooler now than it was ten thousand years ago. Overhead, the text reads, “HUMANS EVOLVED IN RESPONSE TO A CHANGING WORLD.” The message, as amplified by the exhibit’s Web site, is that “key human adaptations evolved in response to environmental instability.” Only at the end of the exhibit, under the headline “OUR SURVIVAL CHALLENGE,” is it noted that levels of carbon dioxide are higher now than they have ever been, and that they are projected to increase dramatically in the next century. No cause is given for this development; no mention is made of any possible role played by fossil fuels. The exhibit makes it seem part of a natural continuum. The accompanying text says, “During the period in which humans evolved, Earth’s temperature and the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere fluctuated together.” An interactive game in the exhibit suggests that humans will continue to adapt to climate change in the future. People may build “underground cities,” developing “short, compact bodies” or “curved spines,” so that “moving around in tight spaces will be no problem.

If anyone has read The Time Machine by HG Wells this will sound familiar. Koch's solution to climate change is that we'll turn into Morlocks.

Bad move. We should be INCREASING NASA funding

Absolutely. Trump and his isolationism was shafting you lot. I repeat China and Russia are very upset at this time, Trump was disrupting the axis of power, they were loving it.

Wild.

A few years ago leftists were all about pushing space exploration as NASA and related programs/spending always helps spur development and achievement here on earth.

Trump pushes for it, now they thinks it’s dumb and want to focus on the climate.

As though somehow they are mutually exclusive.

Good times.

Only Trump could make lefties hate the science of space exploration.

Unless you think there is some Malthusian Trap coming up (or, conversely, strongly believe there isn't one), eventually, space exploration is going to be a necessity. There are only so many resources on this planet and the human population continues to grow.

Long term thinking aside, to call the impulse of exploration childish is asinine. This is the impulse embedded deep within our species that helps drive history forward. Imagine saying "Why develop the printing press? There is a famine going on!"

SpaceX mars plans are awesome, a self sustaining city in Mars by 2050, I hope they manage to pull it off.
